March 27, 20223 yr The comment by Biden was probably inadvisable, but I think walking it back so immediately and forcefully wasn't a good look either. Makes us look weak and rudderless.
March 27, 20223 yr Does anyone still think if Putin just ends his attack on Ukraine, tucks his tail between his legs and pulls all Russian forces out of Ukraine that world relations are going to get back normal pre invasion ?

Is it as weak as wishing for him to be elected to have your student loans forgiven and then trashing his administration at every turn as soon as they foot the bill for you? I'm just asking questions...

That's a truly laughable statement. He's been a million times tougher on Russia than the last guy. If anything, the latest incident shows him to be overly aggressive, but the people around him are creating confusion and uncertainty when they go out and push back against the president's comments. They need to get their messaging in order.

If a US president says Putin shouldn't be in power then it's now US policy that Putin shouldn't be in power because they have the power to make it happen. Also nobody is saying anything about not upsetting Russia. We arrived there a long time ago. Yep. Despite the best efforts of many who are eager to oversimplify what's going on, this is a fairly complex and precarious situation. So beyond keeping Ukraine supplied, and not engaging in direct conflict, I'm not really gonna try to play MMQB and say what we should or shouldn't be doing with absolute certainty, but rhetoric like that sure seems like a gamble we shouldn't be taking. We don't need to be active participants in the de-escalation process, but we also should avoid being part of the escalation process too.

Please go back to the Sixers thread. For everyone else, it’s going to be up to the Russian people to elect a new leader, not us. The entire western world has pretty much labeled him as a war criminal. Of course he should not be allowed to remain in power.

In trumpbot land, Biden is simultaneously both too dovish and too hawkish.

Yup, but that's on the Russian people to carry out. Getting taken out by outside forces may do more harm than good, especially with him flailing so spectacularly right now.

Thought we were still on the "regime change" argument vis-a-vis taking Putin out. Fully support a Mussolini-esque end where's he's hung I'm the streets of Moscow. I wish there was a stronger opposition party presence in Russia.

I believe there is still an opposition, but Russia is quickly becoming an advanced police state with the ability to suppress dissent and crush every deviation within their ranks. Look at what happened to Navalny. So, yes, we need him to be toppled from within, but you have to honestly wonder if this could be achieved without outside help in these circumstances.
