The ghost of Kyiv apparently shot down 15 jets in the last 30 minutes. 2000 of Russia's special forces were butchered by elderly ladies wielding antique butter knives and crumpets.

That graphic would have you believe that over half of Ukraine's air force has been destroyed, yet Russia still doesn't control the air.

Laughable propaganda.

Russia controls the entire airspace. Why do you think Zelensky has been begging for a no fly zone for weeks?

The Russians are fly hundreds of sorties per day- unopposed.

Curious if Russia's pullback from Kyiv has more sinister reasons.

It 100% does.

They realized that with the level of opposition that the Ukrainians were putting out that there’s no way in hell they’d be able to a: take Kiev, hold Kiev, and install a new government.

I think the Russians are looking at the level of local resistance they got when they annexed Crimea and "assisted” the LNR/DNR factions, and thinking that they can take more swaths of land east of the Dnieper and not have as hard of a time holding the land. Looking at the history of Ukraine under the Soviets, the east of the country was the industrial center, and there’s a lot of ethnic Russians there compared to the west. The issue with that though is that most of the people in those lands don’t want to be apart from Ukraine. I think it’s a bit of a gamble on Russia’s part but it may pay off. Realistically it doesn’t require as much local support as you’d think. Remember the American Revolution: only a third of the country wanted to secede, and another third actually wanted to stay, with the middle third not giving a crap either way. So what you’re going to see is Russia try and encircle forces on the east. I wouldn’t be surprised if in two or three weeks you’re going to see some Russian air strikes on bridges across the Dnieper. If I were the Ukrainians, I’d move as many S-300/S-400s I could spare to strategic bridges across the Dnieper.

Realistically the news is going to get pretty quiet for 2-4 weeks and then it’s going to kick off again.

I'm thinking more along the lines of large scale indiscriminate bombing campaigns, deployment of chemical weapons, or worse.
