Oddly enough the Russians updated their tactics about fifteen years ago to a BTG format, and basically tied in a ton of armor and arty to a battalion for flexibility of movement. The problem is that Russia doesn’t have the manpower from either an enlisted or commissioned perspective, so you have units that were designed to fire and maneuver able to fire but unable to maneuver. Which then leads to the fire getting hit because there’s no infantry to support the armor and arty. 
 

If Russia really wanted to modernize their forces, they could have done so and become a force to be reckoned with, but they went a little too classical European with their grift. Take for example their Orlan drone. Thing has a plastic bottle fuel tank and it’s camera is an off the shelf Canon with the buttons glued down. And it costs over $100k a pop. Compare that the the US Army’s equivalent, which is not only less than half the per unit cost, but per unit you actually get two airframes.

The further this thing drags on the more I’m inclined to think that it has nothing to do with geopolitics and giving Russia buffers and has everything to do with natural gas and oil. 
 

Looking at the areas the Russians took over in Georgia and the timing of them showing that they wanted to secure pipelines. Looking at the annexing of Crimea and Donbas in 2014 a year after the discovery of massive oil and gas deposits in western Ukraine, and where they are attacking. 
 

I’m inclined to think this has everything to do with keeping Ukraine from extracting that oil and getting it to Europe and cutting Russia out of the equation for European energy.

I think if you're looking for a "what does Russia stand to gain" angle you can always find one as long as they're in a position to gain something.

I find the idea that Russia just wanted oil all along (if that's what you're saying) to be somewhat sus given their early approach to the invasion. Now, that's not to say that maybe it was always an ancillary benefit and, having failed to remove Zelensky and take Kyiv, they've decided that is now all that's achievable. 

But, going back to the first part of your post, I agree that it was never geopolitical. That theory just never made sense in practice to me.
