from what I can tell these howitzers are supposed to have a longer range than what Russia is trying to use to pummel areas before sending in armor and troops.

They won't have enough to cover everywhere but strategically deployed they should help defense immensely. Survive while inflicting damage to the invaders, strain their still crap logistics, and counterattack.
