I think that even the dumbest 1/3rd of the population, at one point, had enough mental capacity to know that Hitler was bad and the Stalin was almost equally terrible. The dumbest 1/3rd was never actually dumb. What I think has happened is that they've been marginalized and have hit the "F it" phase. What else do they have to lose? So a vacuum is created and people like Trump and the conservative grifters quickly pounce and fill the void. They start feeding them the validation they've been missing their whole lives. They tell them who's to blame and who they can trust. Then they circle the wagons and start to fight back.

May 11, 20223 yr Ukraine has be steadily pushing Russia back to its border around Kharkiv. I'm not a military strategist, but those claiming to be think this is key to forcing a situation that can get Izyum back as well. Time will tell I guess.

The Russians lost badly to the Finns early during WWII. However, when their backs were up against it, look how things worked out at the end of the war for Russia. Not the best idea to push things too far. Much better to try to settle these hostilities instead of stoking the flames of war.
