The uproar over Griner's bust is typical of the insane entitlement of the millennials and minorities in this country. She BROKE THE LAW in Russia. And she was emboldened to do so by all the criminal coddling in the US, which gave her a false sense of security.

And now for her stupidity we're expected to cut a dangerous Russian arms dealer loose? And her wife is "demanding" the government do something? It's absurd.

I feel sorry for her for being stupid enough to get busted on a stupid law, but she's a shining example of celebrity entitlement. If any regular American citizen were in her position no one in Biden's administration would give a damn. Luckily for her the Democrats desperately need their black and LGBTQIA+ votes so they'll make some pathetic deal to get her out.

I’m independent politically so I do not pay much attention to the entire "left vs right” debate in all of this.  In my opinion, Russian propaganda has done a nice job in brainwashing a lot of conservatives (and by default liberals as well) into making this a political debate.

This is simple.  How many white, straight Russians, are given 9 year prison sentences for possessing under 1 gram of cannabis?

Just to recap, we can blame the Russian arrest of Brittany Griner on the following...

1. Millenials
2. Minorities
3. The United States criminal justice system
4. Stupidity
5. Entitlement

Also need to blame democrats for coming to her rescue

It is possible to think Griner was an idiot for bringing drugs to Russia, while also thinking the fact thay she's being kept as essentially a political prisoner by an enemy government is pretty Fed up. Not to go all @DrPhilly on it but there can be nuance here.

Seems pretty logical to me

Russia is Europe's biggest energy supplier - but the US is sending more gas by boat than Russia is by pipeline

Original WSJ report:

https://www.wsj.com/livecoverage/stock-market-news-today-08-03-2022/card/u-s-ships-more-gas-to-europe-than-russia-sends-by-pipeline-UT4mNjMIxrxtX8gLhmNU

The US is now sending more gas to Europe by ship than Russia is sending by pipeline, per the Wall Street Journal.

In July, US liquefied natural gas accounted for 13% of total supply to Europe, compared to 10% from Russian pipelines.

Conflict in Ukraine shows no signs of easing, and the US has stepped in to help the EU amid a historic energy crisis.

According to your logic, Otto Warmbier had it coming too.

There are some differences, namely the fact that Russia had an actual law on the books that she flagrantly violated while Otto was purely the victim of a ruthless dictator using him as a pawn to sacrifice.

No kidding, It's just Russia.  In the most incarcerated nation in the world (United States), it's much more common.

I understand where you are coming when it comes to incarceration rates in the U.S. etc....  but there is a zero chance anyone in the United States would be given a 9 year prison sentence on their first offense for possessing less than 1 gram of Cannabis in 2022.  Not even in the most conservative state in the union.

In over half the states, it would be at most a summary offense. (Traffic ticket) or legal.   In the rest of the U.S., it would have been a misdemeanor (At most).

No doubt what she did was stupid.  Especially from someone who is supposedly "woke".

That said - I'll ask again....How many Russian citizens in 2022  have been sentenced to 9 years in prison for possessing under 1 gram of Cannabis?

Warmbier stole a poster, which is theft if you want to get technical about laws on the books. And we're not talking about mass amounts of weed she was snuggling through, it was like a $20 vape cartridge. Hardly surprising you would continue to defend Russia though.

I have no clue. But looking at it, it seems the charges are higher because it was considered smuggling. Same with a teacher who was sentenced to 14 years.

Bottom line, don’t do drugs in foreign countries.

What’s to defend? They’re a sovereign nation with their own laws. I think weed should be legal. I think Russia’s laws are draconian. But only an imbecile would posses drugs in a foreign country. Especially one that isn’t a western nation.

This could very well have happened in Texas not so long ago.

She's dumb for breaking the law in a foreign country with an authoritarian government, but so was Otto by the same logic. The punishment in both cases clearly doesn't fit the crime.

When?

Post 1 case of a person getting sentenced to 9 years in prison for possession of under 1 gram of Cannabis in Texas in the last 20 years.

I agree, don't possesses any drug in Russia if you're not Russian.  100% in agreement there.

Politics aside - America stands for freedom.

How can anyone who calls themselves an American use the (Obviously moronic) laws of a (currently) enemy state to justify the imprisonment of an American?

Pretty sure if it was Vietnam or Korea we would go tell them to pound sand.

Why not now?

So as a freedom-loving American I guess you'd allow any Mexican crossing the border to bring a personal stash of acid, weed, heroin and coke because small amounts for personal use are all legal there. Ditto for Peruvians bringing in 2 grams of coke. And any other foreigners bringing in things that are legal in their countries.

America might stand for Freedom but maybe you should bone up on your Russian history. Poisoned journalists, genocide, imprisoned rock bands and protesters. A country firmly in the grip of corrupt oligarchs, which we happen to be in the middle of a proxy war with. A country run by a crafty, despotic former KGB chief.

But Griner will be rescued. Biden can't afford not to. Russia and China will use the USA for soccer practice. Between them they have us pathetically outgunned, courtesy of the greedy military industrial complex foisting bad deals on our weak government leaders for decades.

The American Empire is on its last legs, so enjoy your American Freedom while you can.

1 - I did.  ZERO Russians have been given 9 years in prison for possessing under 1 gram of Cannabis in 2022.  ZERO. ;)

2. No

3. Exactly.

4. Outgunned?  You sound Russian or Chinese maybe?

5. Are you Russian or Chinese?

Chill out.  Nobody is defending the bust.  If you read another post I put up in a different message board, you'd see that I said that any administration would seek to get her back under these circumstances.

But that being said, you really need to be brain dead to bring pot into Russia.
