How is it a contradiction?

NATO getting involved means his military is at threat of annihilation if the war remains conventional, so he’s more likely to use a nuke because that’s the only option he has militarily.

Likewise, if his military gets annihilated, he’s more vulnerable domestically, so again he’s more likely to use nukes.

It puts a squeeze on Putin where he would truly have nothing to lose.

In the US it only takes two fingers to press the button.

In Russia it takes a lot more. There will be no nukes. Self preservation is a hell of a drug.

NATO is not getting involved, people don't understand this by now? Also Putin is full of crap, again people don't understand this by now? He does some speech every few months and the media jumps and writes the same crap and the same people on TV say the same crap, guaranteed 5 months from now it will be the same thing. i saw some idiot say gas now will be 8 a gallon all because Putin has mobilized, not sure who are dumber the covid lifers, the anti  vaxers or people like this

He said he'd use nukes if the West got involved in Ukraine. A few seconds later he was crying that he was fighting the West in Ukraine. Putler is a blithering idiot but remains keenly aware that his most affective nuclear strategy is to threaten to use them, not actually using them.

Unless NATO decides they want to march on Moscow there's a negative zero percent chance Putin even thinks about using nuclear weapons.

Russia has said they would not use nuclear weapons unless the survival of the Russian state is in danger. The problem is that the West's stated goal is to end the Russian state.

The West must fail for the good of mankind.

Where exactly did they state that goal?

The goal is the fall of putin. Thats for the good of mankind. Russia could be a prosperous state but not with putin there

Except nato had been involved from the jump. The only thing missing are actual combat troops

And frankly until this war he was just seen as a relatively strong geopolitical "frenemy" that we butted heads with, who we'd like to see replaced with someone who wanted to cultivate relationships with the West in good faith, but nobody thought that was a workable reality to labor towards.

There was no big plan to oust the guy. Putin getting ousted would have had a good if not great chance of resulting in an even crazier nationalist autocrat hostile to the West. Devil you know and all that, given that Putin was seen as a rational actor.

Now? Things have changed because Putin and Russia chose to invade Ukraine.

Putin travels with a poop case, and a staff to tend his poop case.

Rational does not seem to be his strong suit.

He travels with a poop case to keep the west from analyzing it and finding out what he has.

Honestly that's actually pretty smart a device in the sewer that analyzes crap is actually something I could see the CIA doing.

A device in the sewer would have to differentiate his poop from everyone else. Likelihood for contamination might make it trickier than it sounds. I suppose if they had a rough idea of what they wanted to rule out, there's a chance it might provide some value.

Who do you have to piss off in the CIA to get put on "poop collection and analysis" duty.

Heh heh.   Duty.

According to everything I can find, Russia uses the same system the US uses with a nuclear briefcase.

Tactical nukes would be an interesting/terrifying scenario, likely deployed by aircraft so you’d have a pilot/flight crew in the loop but also wouldn’t necessarily be targeting a major city with a significant civilian population, so the psychological shock would be a lot lower.

Hundreds of protesters getting arrested and immediately served their draft papers.  The beginning of the end for Putin is upon us.  By the balls Red square, Putin is cooked.

Given how I drive rental cars, I'd make that distinction too.

It doesn't work the same in Russia. The nuclear briefcase concept is the same but in the US you need authorization from POTUS and one other qualifying person. In Russia, you need five authorizations.

I mean, it was already pretty rough for Russia having to send 60 year old tanks to the battlefield. But blowing them up before they even made it to the front has to be a real kick in the teeth. :roll:

Speaking of abject failure, how is the quality of the troops attacking the Ukraine, going to improve, by conscripting people protesting the war?

You think they are going to give it their all?
