Eh...it completely fell apart in 2008 because of the Great Recession. No one was hiring seasonal workers.

I was dying to get a job when I turned 14; I wanted to buy a Les Paul, but these kids have no hobbies or ambitions. We really do have a parenting crisis in this country that I think is and will be the root cause of many of our problems. Would be interesting to break it down by male and female single households along with married/cohabiting parents.

September 29, 20223 yr 1 minute ago, TEW said: Labor laws prevent 15 year olds from working? No, but in our area nobody was hiring at 15. He tried but couldn't find anything. Even the boardwalk jobs in Ocean City wouldn't hire 15 year olds.

September 29, 20223 yr Increasing demands of colleges may play a factor in that too. Good grades ain't enough nowadays to get you into a good program. Extracurriculars, advanced credits and volunteer work are pretty much requirements nowadays. Despite the fact that IMO working a year or 2 in the service industry is a much more important life lesson

Thats not the issue, the issue is very few hire that young in my area. He does art by commission and makes enough to pay for his computer game downloads lol. He's 16 in March and shouldn't have a problem finding a PT job then.

Weird — you’d figure entry level jobs they’d take what they can get given the labor constraints. I worked at Baskin Robins when I was 15. 2 weeknights and weekends.

Me too. You are supposed to get working papers. I never bothered until senior year in HS when the job asked for them.

So how exactly are labor laws, specifically what you posted, preventing 15 year olds from working? I think it sucks that parents don't make them do it more often.
September 29, 20223 yr Just now, Toastrel said: I said over the table. Legally, you are supposed to have working papers. That was all I said. So.... it doesn't prevent a 15 year old from working.
September 29, 20223 yr There's fewer employers willing to hire younger kids. That's reality. The barriers aren't the permits. Employers have made the conscious and probably rational choice to invest less in workers who don't see the job as more than filling time and not paying enough to justify that time in many cases. On either side. Market is different. It'll change as always.
