Yeah, I’m such a Putin fan.

The fact is he took his shot and he will likely end up controlling (either outright or by proxy) half or more of the country when all is said and done. That’s his objective and he’s likely to achieve it.

Time to go back and play the greatest hits with Casey Kasem!

There are people in here saying that this is some strategic blunder by Putin made out of irrationality. That it was a miscalculation, that he won’t be able to hold the cities, that Russia is economically ruined, etc.

The fact is he knew the sanctions would be the response, he saw an opening, and he took it. He will have most if not all of Ukraine by the end of this mess and, much as we may detest him, it was an intelligent move on his part to achieve his own desired ends.

Bwahahahahahahaha!

The economic concerns would have already been calculated into his decision. This is what Putin did professionally for the KGB. He’s a lot of things, but stupid or short sighted isn’t one of them.

I also don’t think the chances of an Iraq situation are nearly as high. Ukraine and Russia are very similar countries and Putin sees them as brothers of the Russian people. There are a LOT of ethnically Russian people living in Ukraine and many more who support Russia over the west.

Ukraine is the most important aspect of his plans. Giving up, say, Finland is a trade he’s more than happy to make.

Also, don’t discount the knock on effects of these sanctions pushing countries out of the dollar system. It could have a lot of implications down the line if a parallel economic and monetary system develops in the East and South.

I could do this all day. Right into my veins, trumpbot! :excited:

Yes, moron.

It was a calculated move by Putin. He valued Ukraine, like anyone in his shoes would, and saw an opportunity with a weak US President and general chaos from COVID to take it. Taking Ukraine makes a ton of sense for Russia from a geopolitical perspective and having some Nordic countries join NATO is an easy opportunity cost decision.

It’s pretty funny that you think this is some kind of gotcha moment though.

 moar!

How's your day going @Abracadabra

Sham referendums that nobody accepts. AFU killing Russian not-zees by the hundreds daily. Lyman falling. Putin is a laughing stock and international pariah. NATO is bigger and stronger than it was 6 mos ago. Ukraine just cancelled its autumn conscription because they have all the manpower they need to kick Putin's balls back to the real border, not the fake ones Putin is forcing state workers to celebrate.

The picture of the liberation of Lyman is getting clearer. Russian forces were told to hold, and ordered not to surrender. But Russia could not prevent the encirclement.

At some point it became clear to Russian command that Lyman was going to be lost, but did not or could not take the appropriate action - a fighting withdrawal so the men and equipment could live to fight another day.

Finally, after Putin had his Friday party, Russian fighters were able to attempt an escape but by then it was too late. Some made it through, and Russia will no doubt spin this as a successful withdrawal.

As a result Russian forces stationed in Lyman suffered massive casualties and many were taken prisoner.

All of this so that Putin could do his dog and pony show and play make-believe about annexing Oblasts that are under siege by their rightful sovereigns.

This is one of hundreds of examples in this war showing how rotten Russia is from the inside out.

But hey, @Abracadabra and his loser comrades get to bandy about fake maps in a weak attempt to troll the west on an NFL teams unofficial message board, so at least there's that right?

The Ukronazis talked all summer about a Kherson offensive in the South. They were going to liberate the jewel of Crimea. Russia had major forces in the region and what happened?

Here we have a small garrison in the North holding off 6,000 goons for three weeks but deciding the abandoned small town is not worth it, for now. So, they retreated and met up with the major force. Not a major battle or lose for the Russians.

Meanwhile, there's a major build-up of Russian forces in the South. Nikolayev and Odessa may be in the Russian's sights.

Interesting.

"It's not worth it" but worth the clown show involved in claiming the area as annexed.

So from your perspective the Ukrainians just invaded Russia and pushed them back.

Read that again. 🤣

That's a long way to say Russia is losing.

They are occupied in the South, and losing ground slowly but steadily around Kherson, thus requiring reinforcements from the north where Ukraine took advantage and punched through putting Russia on its heels.

Kherson and Crimea were always going to be the most difficult for Ukraine to wrestle from the invaders. Choking off routes from the north will help soften them up though. Melitopol may fall before Ukraine takes another serious shot at Kherson.

And how many Kremlin appointed officials have met untimely deaths at the hands of Ukraine partisans?

More Russians have escaped over the border since mobilization than were part of the original invading force. Russians seemed fine going along with this war when the rural poors from other time zones were the cannon fodder. But they're running out of poors, and now have to send old men in their 50s to a meat grinder.

Putin miscalculated on multiple fronts here. And he's too committed to admit he screwed up. Because that would be "weakness," and one thing a would-be Russian Tzar cannot be is weak. And men will die, and Russia's awful demographics will get worse.

Putin has doomed Russia.

Honestly it's a concern. A perfectly good scenario would be an inwardly chastened Putin who is given some kind of exit ramp he can sell domestically despite surrendering all of Ukraine back to ... Ukraine.

At least then you have a head of state in Russia you know even if you don't trust them.

There are worse people in Russia that are a step or two away from being the would-be Czar.

But I wonder if Putin's future is not linked to this war now.

I think a main motivator for the annexation was so that he could deploy conscripts to those areas.
