I don't really want to acknowledge the Musk crap because it's such a sideshow, but without getting into the weeds on it the Ukrainian spokesman (ambassador? whatever he is) was out of line telling Musk to "f*** off" after Starlink has been such an advantage given to them, while Musk also needs to stop playing games here and get on team USA + Ukraine. Musk doesn't need to be a child here.

Obviously on this matter I'm probably the least objective poster when it comes to Ukraine, but my issues are in that Musk spoke with Putin (the phrase he used in his tweet referencing the mistake is telling), and his products and services were already bought and paid for. Also the off ramp terms he was outlining were obtuse. 

Honestly when you can't handle someone telling you to F off, you need to grow a pair.

As a diplomat, I know there are many other ways to speak diplomatically. Especially, considering who he was talking to. The guy who played a large part in making it possible for all of Ukraine to not be under Russian control already, months ago. 

Instead of the US trying to make Musk sound heartless on twitter, maybe the sit down and educate that ambassador a little bit and see if an apology cant fix things.

In the end, musk is heartless if he takes his ball and goes home over the comment. But I dont mind him proving his point to the idiot ambassador. That was friggin stupid.

100% agree with all of it.

Musk can make that guy eat his words. I think after all Musk just did for that country, he has earned shoving that guys foot in his mouth for him.

But he better be the bigger guy in the end and continue providing the service.

 

All that said, I still understand him not making them work in Crimea. But I would not be in support of a full withdraw of his services, at all.

Yeah I agree Musk is overreacting, but it's also a situation where the Ukrainian telling him to "f off" seems like just adding fire to a situation. The reality is that Ukraine is in a MUCH better place if they can ensure access to Starlink, so the guy would have been better off biting his lip or at least being more, uh, diplomatic.

Musk is totally out of line playing at any of these geopolitical games around Ukraine-Russia. And from what I understand Starlink terminals were largely bought and paid for by the US Gov't, though internet access itself is a separate fee and being paid from other funds. Some terminals have not been paid for, but that is less than 20%. Given how dependent SpaceX is on US Gov't funding, he too is playing a stupid game here. 

Musk is absolutely the biggest d-bag in the room on this. Whether he's been paid "in full" at this stage, he's still realized tens of millions in revenue from this Ukraine-Starlink operation, and with so much other revenue outside of this also derived from the US Gov't he's being quite a fool. 

Just don't also need Ukrainians lobbing verbal molotovs to complicate it.

Not just the govt funding for space X but if he creates too much negative publicity, the rest of his companies will suffer too.

Tons of people could boycot tesla. Cars, roofs, energy storage, etc.

People could boycot starlink in their homes (though many of those who have it, have it because they had no other option). But he could also lose his deal with Royal Caribbean to be the wifi provider on their entire fleet of ships. If other companies choose to not be associated with him he stands to lose a TON of business.

He has to be too smart to let that happen. But he does deserve to play a little game of chicken here until that ambassador eats his words. Hopefully that guy has heard from members of US and Ukraine's governments to ream him a new arse. 

 

Look... USAID paid for a certain amount of terminals. If SpaceX has now gone above and beyond that amount they need to be compensated for them. $124M is nothing in the grand scheme of things.

But if Musk is threatening to pull all Ukraine terminals, even the ones he's already been paid for because someone told him to F off, then he's probably the biggest pile human feces on the planet.
