This is interesting: Popular Mechanics: "hypersonic" Khinzhal is just air launched Iskander So it's a ballistic missile that can make minor course changes to help evade air defenses. But it's not new, nor is it likely to be much faster than the ground launched version. Its main feature is that being air launched its detection window starts later and it may be able to achieve slightly higher speeds. But it cannot truly maneuver at hypersonic speeds, which is the definition of a "hypersonic missile," which will require an entirely different type of engine. And FWIW the US has ballistic missiles - and missile defense systems - that can make minor course corrections to help it evade air defenses. We just don't pretend they're "hypersonic missiles" like Russia does. Because they're not.
