Because Ukraine wanted to be Ukraine and not Little Russia or Russia's little brother, they are throwing a tantrum and started an imperial war killing over 100k between Russia and Ukraine, with casualties in the 100s of thousands, and thousands of Ukrainian children forcefully kidnapped back to Russia to be Russified on a diet of Moscow propaganda. One of Russia's primary goals here is to eradicate Ukraine as an idea. This isn't conjecture, it's literally the policy.
