He'll gain territory and in the process get an unsustainable insurgency (you'd think this would've been a lesson Russia would've learned by now, but apparently not) and he'll lose alliances (however loose they were), and of course he'll endure economic hardships along with potentially his grasp on his own country. This was an absolutely stupid move by him. China is the wild card.... Putin says "See how the West defends Ukraine? That's what they'll do for Taiwan." Does Xi fall for the bait and risk isolation from the West? I don't think so, but I don't know.
February 24, 20223 yr TDSers wanting a proxy war to stop Russia from "losing more than theyre gaining" is some kind of logic

But one thing at a time. That works if we don't want to actually put them in the Straits. But definitely time for some exercises in the South China Sea. Maybe a nice arms sale announcement to Taiwan as well.
February 24, 20223 yr Russia is arresting anti war protestors in Moscow. Nothing like living under a Dictatorship. Trump approves.

(There's a fine example of how "tough" Trump was as president and how much respect he commanded . if you want to see actual weakness see Trump's comments as he signed near unanimously passed veto-proof bills that enabled sanctions against individuals suppressing protests.)

February 24, 20223 yr So I'm sure a bunch of you know more than me about this but I'm not convinced this is going to lead to action on Taiwan. Besides a much clearer US commitment to action to defend Taiwan, the situation itself doesn't seem as tense. There's no uprising pro-mainland movement. Both China and Taiwan seem somewhat OK with their current semi- autonomous existence as long as no one rocks the boat. I dunno I'm sure I'm missing plenty it just doesn't seem as obvious a parallel to me.

February 24, 20223 yr 18 minutes ago, vikas83 said: The real goal here should be two-fold. First, sanction the ever living hell out of Russia, including Putin and his inner-circle. Cutting them off from SWIFT has to be a part of this. Second, try and turn Ukraine into Putin's Iraq (or another Afghanistan just without the creating Al-Qaeda side effect). Start supplying weapons, money, etc. to Ukrainian insurgents and try to bog the Russians down. Putin himself won't get exhausted, and there it no electorate to face, but we need to make this cost them real money and assets. The Ukrainians have people who will fight, and we should arm them. Ukraine's only hope against Russia is to turn it into a prolonged guerilla conflict. So yeah, we should help them with supplies and weapons. Or else who's next? The Baltics? Poland?

I dunno I'm sure I'm missing plenty it just doesn't seem as obvious a parallel to me. It is a very different situation. The only real concern has been that China has moved closer to Russia, and is actively supporting them here. There are some comments related to Chinese support being a precursor to more action on Taiwan. I doubt it, but I'd still mobilize to make it clear that unlike Ukraine, we have obligations to Taiwan.
