Many of the foreign countries we have bases in chip in plenty, and in many cases, it’s less expensive for us to house troops in some foreign countries than it is in the US. Not having those based overseas would cost us more in the long run.
December 26, 20241 yr Those bases give us a tremendous amount of diplomatic power. That is their main purpose together with deterring countries like Russia from taking over key markets for our goods and services.

December 27, 20241 yr So after Russia hit that Azerbaijani airline over Russian airspace, they jammed EM and wouldn’t allow it to land in Russia, instead directing it out to the Caspian Sea so it would just crash out there and no one would know.

Typical Russian protocol for bird strikes.
December 27, 20241 yr Have we had any posts in here about the crazy Ukrainian dragon drones? I may have missed those posts.
December 27, 20241 yr btw - For the 3rd time in the last 12 months a container ship has destroyed comms/electrical cables on the bottom of the Baltic sea by dragging their anchors. This time it was in Finnish waters and the Finns managed to detain the entire ship and crew. A clear hybrid style attack.

I heard that the Finns were expecting it to a degree and the Finnish border guard actually took the ship via helo insertion fast enough that the ships anchors were still down. Honestly not sure why this ish is still being tolerated.

Lots of noise over here now so NATO is moving a step forward at least in the press/messaging.

I guarantee it’ll stop real quick.

They’re basically just dropping thermite along three lines to destroy the foliage (cover), and take out whatever else gets hit by them. People keep thinking of drones as the future of warfare, but they’re essentially a poor man’s artillery piece. Drone ordinance is cheaper to make, but it doesn’t have the same earth shattering kaboom as an arty round, and as it turns out making tubes and arty shells is kind of a complex industrial task. Much of the drones you see are dropping grenades or mortar rounds, so basically a 10m circle of destruction, and it’s like one at a time. With a normal arty or mortar barrage you’re taking out a much larger area. The dragon drones are basically replacing white phosphorus rounds. Realistically also IMO drones are kind of a crutch. A professional western military wouldn’t need them outside of say a FIST role. They’re using them for recon a lot, but the best recon tool is your own eyeballs. Sometimes you can get lucky with shots though. My one buddy who transferred to the front put up a flare one night, and it came down perfectly on something in the Russian trench and within a few minutes the whole tree line was engulfed. One thing this war is making me realize is how woefully unprepared we are for the next big one. GWOT was a bunch of direct fire engagements. Big wars aren’t. We shouldn’t have taken our foot off the gas in funding military procurement after ‘92.
