New York Giants plan to bring back Joe Judge, Daniel Jones for 2022 season, sources say

The New York Giants are planning to bring back head coach Joe Judge and quarterback Daniel Jones for the 2022 season, league sources tell ESPN.

The Giants believe both Judge and Jones deserve the opportunity to demonstrate their talents next season, even though New York already has been eliminated from the playoffs and has clinched a fifth consecutive season with double-digit losses.

The Giants still are expected to have difficult conversations with multiple members of the organization in an attempt to diagnose all that has gone wrong in recent seasons, and Judge will be a key part of those conversations.

Many sources around the league believe the Giants' big change will involve general manager Dave Gettleman, who could decide to step down after four seasons with the team.

One wrinkle that could complicate New York's plans is that a new GM potentially would want to hire a new head coach rather than retain Judge, but those conversations would occur later in the offseason, and Giants ownership would convey its preference to keep Judge.

Judge enters Sunday's game against Philadelphia with a 10-20 career record, but despite some issues with his assistants, he has shown the Giants enough to make them want to see him succeed.

Jones, selected by New York with the No. 6 pick in the 2019 draft, has played behind a shaky offensive line and hasn't always received all the support he has needed, but the Giants still believe he can be effective.

The Giants announced this past week that Jones, 24, will miss the remainder of this season because of a neck injury. Jones completed 64.3% of his passes this season for 2,428 yards, 10 touchdowns and seven interceptions. He cut down dramatically on his turnovers with 10 in 11 starts, after committing 39 turnovers in 26 starts over his first two seasons.

Veteran Mike Glennon has started the past three games in Jones' absence but has struggled, completing just 51% of his passes for 477 yards, two touchdowns and five interceptions. The Giants (4-10) have lost all three of those games, by a combined total of 78-36.

Jake Fromm will replace Glennon and make his first career NFL start Sunday against the Eagles, sources have confirmed to ESPN. The Giants will also get back one of their offensive weapons Sunday as rookie wide receiver Kadarius Toney is expected to return, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter. Toney has missed the team's past four games with an oblique/quad injury and a stint on the reserve/COVID-19 list.

The Giants have months to decide whether to pick up the fifth-year option on Jones' contract, and New York also could keep him beyond the 2022 season with a long-term extension or a franchise tag.

I'm going to guess that Gettleman, Judge and Jones all get one more year. They will make some window dressing changes like a coordinator or a position coach or two. When they inevitably have double digit losses again in 2022, they'll clean house completely.

I'm not sure Jones will get another year. I mean what justification is there really? Especially given NY have multiple first round picks and if they change GM that GM may want to pick his own QB.

No good QB's in this draft.

Gettleman is gone. No question. Jones will get one more year, but they won’t pick up the fifth year option. Judge gets another year. Those are my guesses. I would be ok with that. As long as DG is gone. I would also be ok with the new GM cleaning house.

Can we give the Giants Roseman?

Or anyone for that matter. Because of him I don’t get why some fans get excited about high draft picks.

Thank goodness for that 2017 season; we lived long enough to see the eagles win at least one super bowl -_-

Yup I am from Northern NJ and became an Eagles fan at age 5 and a half for the 1992 season. I had to wait what 25 years for a championship? Some of you guys waited like 60 lol.

I've been a fan since Jaws, so the wait was long.   My Dad saw them win in '48, '49 and '60 but sadly didn't quite make it to 2017.

Still, I am happy they won once in my lifetime.   Felt a bit like the 1980 Olympic hockey team beating the Rooshkies.

But I think they all have higher ceilings and floors than Jones does.

Blow the whole thing up.  I wouldn't strap a new Gm to a coach with nothing significant on his resume.  You may as well keep Jones because his value is so low, but I expect steep competition from a Bridgewater/Foles type.  And if the new GM likes a Qb in the draft, he won't be hesitating to pull the trigger.

As an Eagles fan I hope that they give Gettleman, Jones and Judge multi year contracts.

However, I think their best move would be to get rid of both Judge and Gettleman, bring in a new GM who can hire the coach he wants and then figure out if Jones can be the guy or not.

I also would not be shocked if they were in on getting Watson or Wilson. With two high draft picks, they could go the route of getting a veteran QB and still address their offensive/defensive line.

Gettleman is 100% out. They will lie and say he retired instead of got fired as that is what the Giants do but he is done. But they probably don't blow it all up and keep Judge and Jones.

Pass on those two QBs. Use the draft picks to fix the OL. That’s the key to the entire team. The Eagles have a terrible roster, but some talent on the OL and it’s led to 8 wins. The Giants actually have some offensive play makers, but arguably the worst OL in the league. Look at the result.

If I was GM of Giants, I would want no part of Daniel Jones. I would bring in a veteran QB. Daniel Jones has been there for 3 years and hasn't really shown anything. At least Hurts is decent.

I think you’re underestimating the impact good OL play has on a QB. Switch Jones and Hurts and the results would be similar. Jones has never had the benefit of time in the pocket or a running game. No QB can succeed under those conditions. None.

Daniel Jones just don't impress me. Andy Dalton had players on offense yet still sucked. If you were Giants GM, would you put your job on the line for Daniel Jones?

No, but I’d like to see how he plays with a better OL. So I’m keeping him around next year, not picking up the 5th year option and using premium draft capital on the OL. If he plays well, great. If not, he moves on.

Best job in the league. Backup QB/spot starter. They play for a decade +,  make a fortune and leave relatively healthy.

Fifth consecutive season with double digit losses. Geeze. Pathetic. I didn't realize that they were that bad.

I thought it was worse, actually. I had to look it up to see they had one good season in the last nine seasons, finishing 11-5  in 2016.

That is incredible.  The dude isn't even a top end backup and never was, he's closer to practice squad than he is to starter
