Like the signing .. wish given his age it could've been a 3-4 year deal but I get it.

I mean we shall see bud. I have no idea who is going to be there at #15. I mean how many QBs go before us? If it's 1 or 2 then that's not ideal but it could be 3.

Number of QBs that went before pick 15 in last few drafts:

2021: 4 (Jones was the 5th taken with pick 15)

2020: 3

2019: 2 (Haskins was the 5th taken with pick 15)

Yeah I suspect at least 2 go... Its not a great class for QBs as we know but there are a lot of QB needy teams.

Missing Reddick. But yeah it does seem that way, except a lot of people think they'll go DT or DE high. I would love to see a defensive heavy draft on days 1 & 2 then fill in depth on offense day 3.

Not sure when or where Reddick plays except in nickel situations.

Does he play LB in the base defense or not?

I'll take Defensive end for $1,000 Alex

i see him all over the field lined up as both the Sam Lb (mostly rushing the passer but sometimes in coverage) and sometime from more of an edge/de position wether that’s by sliding someone like BJ inside to DT or not on passing downs or just rushing 5

What?  I'm shocked @HazletonEagle hasn't posted in this thread as this was a player he was advocating to sign.  He's probably as happy as a pig in slop right now.

He's put up good stats and has improved each season.  Not worried about his size if he can play well as seems to be the case here.  Yay!  We got an actual LB!

A linebacker like this needs the front line to hold up blockers and let him roam free. I’m not so sure the Eagles have a front with that kind of mindset.

There it is. The Eagles are getting guys on the cheap cause they want to come home.

It's obvious that Gannon wasn't able to run his defense with the lack of athleticism we had at LB.

He had to change his scheme and had mixed results.

I'll give Howie props for signing players on both sides of the ball who are scheme fits rather than adhering to his own dogma.

Now, the big test..... The draft

The Chargers didn't have a good DL (at least their interior DL was considered to be the weakness) and he produced.

We do need to draft a DT and if we don't get one of Davis/Wyatt/Winfrey/Jones then I'm going to be really pissed.  We have Hargrave for this season, but he could be gone after that.  Williams is more of a tweener who could be a 4i/3-4 DE.  That said, of the 4 DTs in the draft that I listed, IMO Wyatt and Winfrey are more like Williams while Davis/Jones are more like the kind of DT/NT we need to play over the C.  I know loads of us here are coveting the DE Johnson, but I wouldn't be mad if we drafted one of Davis/Jones while also drafting one of Wyatt/Winfrey.  Sweat as the stand up 4th DL player who roams around the LoS looking for his pass rush mismatch and Reddick also coming off the edge with speed or right up the A gap on a blitz.  Maybe draft another DE/OLB 3-4 type later with one of the 5th Round picks.

Point is we can still add to the DL (if we don't trade away picks for a move up) with players more suited to the scheme.

We are going to like this kid.  He runs good and has bad intentions when he gets to the ball.  A Philly kind of player.

Seems like a good upgrade at the LB position, much needed. It's an extremely rare chance they would draft a 1st round LB but I'd still like to see a day 2 LB drafted this year.

Troy Andersen
Leo Chenal

It’s a one year deal. Why would this rule out the Eagles taking a LB high in the draft?

I'd like to see the Eagles come out of the draft with Chad Muma to add to this group.  I don't see a 1st round LB either.

We also still have a long way to go until the season. There will be some good players hit the street.

Because Howie's philosophy as it pertains to LBs is band aid, stop gap or bargain basement.  When White's contract is up, Howie will look for another 1 year deal or a cheap FA......and he'll take a LB in the 4th, 5th or 6th round.  It's not hard to see that over the years, the eagles simply do not value LBs.

definition of insanity...repeat the same actions and expect a different result

I just don't get that mentality. I mean I'm not saying we need to spend high picks on LBs all the time but top LBs absolutely can make a huge impact. I just don't get why Howie overlooks the position time and time again.

Linebackers are the running backs of the defense. Lots of middle of road competent players available all around the league for fairly low costs. There only a few who are truly elite game changers at the position.

Not saying I agree… I want a stud linebacker in the middle of the Eagles defense for the next decade, but that’s the mindset.

Edit: Also one of the most physically punishing positions on the field. It’s tough a an RB or LB to play all 17 games in a season.

Maybe because LB is the least valuable position when it comes to contracts in FA.

Imagine you have the choice between a LB and a more valuable position: Who wouldn‘t take the best player at a position of value in the draft and buy a LBer for relatively cheap?

And the more valuable position is on a cheaper draft deal too.

It just is a better way to build your team. And in terms of contracts: This shows what almost everyone thinks about the position in the NFL. This isn‘t just us setting LB value low, it‘s most teams.

I‘d prefer picking my fourth top guy at CB/WR/DE/OT over a LB too. Almost every time..

TJ Edwards performed well last year. Davion Taylor remains a mystery. He really started to come along last year, but injuries derailed his progress. Can he stay healthy and become the player the Eagles hoped he'd develop into? With Edwards really only signed through 2022, the 1-year deal with White and questions around Taylor, the Eagles still might use one of their 1sts on a LB. It's not like we have anything we can count on for 2023 at the position.

Well they haven't in 43 years so it would be a shock.

This isn't just a Howie issue, not sure why people pretend it is.

Maybe, but they haven't had 3 picks in the first round during that time either.
