I don't even understand what's going on with these checkmarks. there's two kinds now? or there was, briefly, and now they're not? it seems like they're still doing the $8/month thing. but the whole point of the blue checkmark was to provide assurance that the person attached to the account is who they claimed to be. so why would someone pay $8/month if it no longer is going to provide that assurance? or is it? I don't use twitter for anything except sharing crap here pretty much. occasionally with the wife. the checkmark crap never held interest.

Pretty sure the idea is that you pay the $8 to get the mark and thereby verify the account holder. Still the same concept only you have to pay for it.
November 9, 20222 yr Not sure how $8 is verification of anything, other than you could have bought a coffee at Starbucks but instead went for a blue check.

November 10, 20222 yr So Elon’s proposed blue badge just verifies that you paid $8 but not your identity?
November 10, 20222 yr People fleeing Twitter yesterday crashed Mastodon. No, I have no idea what Mastodon is.
November 10, 20222 yr It took a 19-year-old with $8 10 minutes to blow up Elon Musk’s new blue check scheme https://www.dailydot.com/debug/elon-musk-twitter-blue-adam-schefter/ Quote At 2:29pm, Adam Schefter of ESPN reported news that would shake up the NFL: Josh McDaniels, head coach of the Oakland Raiders, was fired. The tweet racked up more than 3,000 likes and thousands of retweets, as all Adam Schefter tweets do. After all, he’s the primary source of breaking news around the NFL and he is verified on Twitter so people can tell at a quick glance they are looking at real news from a trusted source. Except, it wasn’t Schefter who tweeted that—despite the account’s display name reading "Adam Schefter” and a blue checkmark appearing next to it. It was @AdamSchefterN0T, an account created earlier that day by a 19-year-old college kid who had $8 to spare. Musk is winning like Trump.

November 10, 20222 yr So I'm far from a tech person, so I'll put it out to the board. These fake accounts will get banned, but is there anything stopping someone with a VPN and an anonymous debit card from just making as many accounts as they please for $8 a pop?

November 10, 20222 yr If he wanted to kill Twitter, he sure seems to be going about it in a way that is very costly to himself.

November 11, 20222 yr Twitter's new management and asinine policies are perfectly fine. It's those damn liberal activists that are scaring away advertisers!
