He's not even really much of the big idea guy. He's basically the hype man. He really mastered telling VCs and public investors what they wanted to hear while some really great engineers actually did the work. At the SpaceX HQ, his desk is in the corner (it was a totally open floor plan, no offices) and in the 45 minutes I was there, no one came by to interact with him. Sure, he was technically in a meeting with us, but it was pretty obvious that no one really interacted with him. When we tried to talk about the business (meeting was re: Solar City), the balance sheet, etc. he flat out told us he doesn't bother himself with such things.

The problem is he started to believe his own press clippings and now thinks he knows how to run a company. He doesn't.

I met plenty of people like that who could hype a good game but had zero clue how to run a profitable enterprise. Plenty of nimbnutz on the investor side  as well that buy into it and again have no clue of how a successful business actually operates. They all get exposed sooner or later. Maybe Musk’s time has come.

He needs to hire the mods from the EMB and just start banning everyone who causes trouble

You looking to start trouble again?

This part reminds me of Elizabeth Holmes. It's amazing how many people are seen as successful based on nothing more than their ability to BS.

Yeah. Well thought out strategy going well

I mean, who could've possibly predicted this was going to be such a disaster??

Oh, everyone with a couple brain cells to rub together you say? Yes I suppose so.

Guys, come on.  No one could have predicted that--

Oh, I'm sorry what was that?  Oh, literally everyone predicted this?

When I first heard about the new 8 buck verification thing, I actually thought to myself "so can anyone just pay 8 bucks and use any name they want?", but I never said it out loud.  I thought it sounded like a stupid question and there had to me more to it.

He's screwed.

Can companies take legal action? Or will they just have to start creating alternate versions of their company name the same way they buy out all of the domain names for their sites

Doubtful they'd have any real case.

It definitely hurts creditability which can be more costly as far as ad revenue losses.

Yeah, that's what I was referring to. It's losing all credibility.

The issue is a ton of quant algorhythms are set up to track verified Twitter accounts and react. There's no human involvement.

I work in advertising, and he's been doing a tour of the large agencies, explaining what changes to expect at Twitter (and trying not to scare us away). In this venue, he plays the role of mature businessman. So mostly polite, but vague answers:

-The layoffs won't affect the product or service, just a "rebalancing of resources"

-Free speech does not mean hate speech

-He wants to bring in some kind of video format. Said something like "Vine died on the vine."

But also...he has "no regrets about how he handled the first few weeks"

I still think advertisers are gonna be hesitant to buy in. Because the genius can't seem to separate his personal brand from the Twitter brand...and his personal brand is complete chaos. Trust him on Monday, and you'll regret it by Tuesday.
