I'm sorry I brough such a depressing topic into the blog.  A little back story without too much detail. I met my friend 12 years ago during an AF commissioning program. He was on top of the world

IMO it depends on why he looks like he's struggling. If the WRs and/or line struggle Hurts should get an extended look. If the problem clearly lies with him - Line gives him time and receivers are getting open, it'll depend on how the alternatives look. Again IMO.

So if he plays like last year.

For the first time in a while, I'm actually kinda excited to see what the defense looks like come Week 1.

I think Brooks is that guy. He's not flashy, but he hits the hole well, has good contact balance and breaks through arm tackles. Good size at 5'11" 213

Agreed. Surprised he wasn't drafted. I've watched a lot of him at OU and I'm a big fan. Imo, he'll fly up the depth chart

Right, but we will have no idea what McPhearson, Gowan, Vincent or any of these guys can do if they keep bringing in aging vets.  Howie made the investments, as little as they were, in a lot of young CB.

I just want a complete overhaul of the defensive backfield.  That includes getting whatever you can for Slay in a trade.  Howie has invested as little as possible to improve the position group.  Blow it up, see if anyone you have is worth a damn and if not, attack FA and the draft next year.  Call the Bengals about Jessie Bates.

You're right though, a lot depends on Hurts.

3 issues with bates of the bengals. First don’t see the bengals giving in and just dealing him. I think Bates ultimately plays the season on that franchise tag and becomes a free agent next year. Second if the bengals do decide to deal him you are gonna pay a premium price for him. Not sure the eagles want to trade the assets it would take to acquire him when there’s a huge unknown at QB going forward and they might need them at that point to acquire the QB.

The third issue is bates has a big variation in his play year to year. Using PFF (TIFWIW) in 2018 he graded out at 79.9 (rookie year). In 2019 he graded out 61.2. In 2020 he was phenomenal at 90.1. In the regular season in 2021 he was 56. But in the postseason he played phenomenal. Again it’s PFF but I think part of the reason the Bengals are hesitant to give him a long-term deal and want to play him on the franchise tag this year is because of his variation year to year with his performance. Even last year during the regular season he was eh and then during the post season he returned back to 2020 form. It’s definitely a risk to give up draft capital and pay Bates especially when you have unknown at QB. Marcus Williams made a lot more sense to just overpay as he was a FA.

It would be a good thing if you want the 18th pick in the draft.  And with the Saints adding Landry, that pick will be in the teens also.

Howie's P grew 3 sizes this year.

I am curious how much time they'll give him if he continues to struggle to do anything in the passing game. The team is getting set up nicely

I his fans and others are saying to give him the season but I'm not sure that'd be a good thing

For me it goes back to the loss against the Giants last season -- that game capped a 7-game stretch between Week 5 and Week 13 where Hurts was a 56% passer (115/206) with 6 TD passes and 6 INT.  If Hurts hadn't been injured in that game and out of the lineup afterward anyway, I think there would have been real calls for him to be sat down.  Sirianni wouldn't have done it, but there would have been some public pressure building up.

Minshew didn't just walk into Sirianni's office and ask what he needed to do to be the starter just to be a ****; he was likely aware how poorly Hurts was playing, and the life he brought back into the offense.  Remember, the Eagles dropped to 5-7 after that loss to the Giants.

There will be an expectation from the Eagles brass to win 11+ games this season.  The first half of the schedule is cream-puff easy; if the Eagles are below .500 after the first 6 games I think there will be some loud murmurs about how much rope Hurts should have.

I know the saints schedule is hard. But i actually think the saints are going to be better than what people think. Their roster outside of LT has gotten upgrades. Their WR is much better than it was last year with landry, olave and Thomas. Winston is better than Hill and Siemian. While losing Marcus Williams hurts, jenkins was nearly finished. If Maye is healthy along with Mathieu safety imo is actually as good if not better (again assuming maye is healthy and returns to pre-injury form). Really losing Armstead is the big hit and they drafted penning who’s a rookie so will have growing pains.

To me it’s really going to come down to if Dennis Allen is able to be a good HC. losing Payton isnt easy to replace.

Not only Hurts, Gannon and Sirianni, outside of injuries, have no excuses either.

Depending on Hurts’s progression, Siri is in a tough spot. Do you play a more traditional passing offense that you’d like to run, and see if Hurts can handle it? Because if he can’t, your record will suffer.

Or do you keep doing RPOs, and have more of a run based offense with QB runs, like they did toward the middle of last year and had some success playing to Hurts’ strengths? Because that’s not really gonna cut it against playoff teams, as we saw.

Idk what I would do, to be honest. Really, the only way any of this works out is if Hurts takes a significant leap as a passer and reader of defense.

Weapon X also (Tyree Jackson)

Howie if Hurts sucks this year after giving him a much improved roster

Adding Reddick, White, Bradberry, Davis, and Dean to this defense is quite a haul.

I would give Hurts exactly 3 games to pull his head outta his ass, and then sit him for Minshew.

Looking forward to Hurts being the QB here for a very long time with those core Howie is putting together.

I think it depends on who the backup is and what they think of him. If, somehow, Carson Strong is the backup and they like what they see from him in practice, you kinda need to see him in games before you go moving a bunch of draft capital to move up for a QB next year. Similar to what they did with Wentz/Hurts.

But if he sucks, and they don’t feel Minshew is the guy, then may as well stick it out with Hurts and get the better draft pick.

If Hurts is playing at the same level as last year then IMO, you need to play Minshew.  If Hurts plays like last year and the Eagles again are middle of the pack and he's eligible for a new contract then the Eagles are going to be in a situation where they overpay for a QB who is a glorified RB.  That's IF he plays like last year.

That clearly isn’t their plan though. They’re surrounding Hurts with friends and people he’s played with. They’re truly all in. I just don’t see that going well with AJ Brown.. "Hey, come here and play with your friend.. actually he sucks. But y’all can sit next to each other on the bench when the defense is on the field!”

I honestly think, unless they know something we don’t, that it was a huge mistake. I love Brown as a player, but getting emotions invoked with how Hurts played in the playoffs last year seems like playing with fire. Some serious boom or bust potential

Safeties can make up for lack of talent at Cs and vice versa. Could we be okay at the last safety position after the Bradberry signing? Or could one more adjustment be made?

I always think the Eagles are feeding Warren Sharp his Eagles talking points, so this post is a little alarming to me. On the surface, it doesn't make much sense for the Eagles to play the comp pick game next year.

The potential comp pick is an added benefit of the signing.  It doesn't seem to me that the Eagles plan on being big FA spenders next season.  They also may have to invest multiple picks to get a QB.  I don't know whether Sharp is getting fed info from the Eagles.  It has been reported that he has done work for them by providing statistical analysis.
