With the weapons we have, Hurts needs a minimum of like 3800-4000 passing yards, 30ish passing TDs and a 64% completion percentage (at minimum, though it's still low) to have a decent year.

Good luck with that.

But, but, but he's gonna be MVP

Good enough for what?

If Im Smith and have another season below 1000 yards, I ask for a trade. And that would be incredibly disappointing for Goedert.

The second line in your post answers your question.

Tough expectations for a rookie

I looked at the 3rd year averages from:
Cam Newton
Lamar Jackson
Josh Allen
Jameis Winston
Kyler Murray
Daniel Jones
Sam Darnold
Carson Wentz
Russell Wilson
Ryan Tannehill
Patrick Mahomes
Baker Mayfield
Dak Prescott

3rd year averages in 16 game season:
Passing Yards - 3,437
Passing TD's - 22
Int's - 9
Comp % - 65.2%
Passing Attempts - 462

3rd year median in 16 game season:
Passing Yards - 3,504
Passing TD's - 24
Int's - 9
Comp % - 64.4%
Passing Attempts - 473

Remember, this is all in a 16 game season. The above benchmark would be the minimum since we now have an extra game. 6 of the above players made the Pro-Bowl.

Nitpicking here but Jackson never won NFL OPOY and his MVP year was year 2. His year 3 wasn't that good (2,757 yards, 26 TD's 9ints)

Outside of Mahomes, Murray and Prescott, I'd argue Hurts supporting cast this year blows all the others away.

I just changed it, IDK what I was looking at when I was typing that out.

Yeah the buzz has been Patricia as the defacto OC and Joe Judge as the QB coach. Bizarre to say the least.

I have said it before, and it needs to be said again.

AJ Browns best season was 2020, 70 catches for 1075 yards and 11 TD''s.  That should be the baseline for what is expected in Philly with what was paid in draft capital and a new contract. And you also need to get DeVonta and Goedert their targets and production.  So Ryan Tannehill's 2020 season is the baseline for what Hurts needs to do this year.

3800 yards, 33 TD's and 65.5% completions.

If he hits that baseline and AJ Brown gets his, that leaves in comparison DeVonta, 65 for 984 ( Corey Davis ) and Goedert 41 for 448 ( Jonnu Smith )

Is that good enough ???

And before the we will be a running team crowd comes in, the stats above are with Derrick Henry rushing for 2000 yards.

3,800 yards in a 17 game season (224 ypg) should be perfectly reasonable expectation for Hurts. He's not Lamar as a runner, and the Eagles aren't running that wonky Ravens offense anyway, so those comparisons should be thrown out.

My bar: 3,800 passing yards, 28 passing TDs, fewer than 15 INTs, 500+ rushing yards. Not going to be anal about comp %, especially if he's constantly throwing downfield, but anything below 63% would be a disappointment.

Calvin Johnson is the best WR I’ve ever seen from a talent perspective. He was like Moss and TO combined.

He wasn't quite as fast as Moss or as physically dominant as TO but he was the best athlete of the 2.

I think the question needs to be asked what happens if Hurts shows nominal improvement, the team wins 11 games, and they win a wildcard playoff game then lose in the divisional round?

Say Hurts completes 63%, 3,600 yards, 21 TD/11 INT.  Do the Eagles take the approach DAL and WAS took with Dak and Cousins and say 'you're playing good; we still need to see more', and have Hurts play out the final year of his rookie contract before committing to an extension?  Would they dare even consider franchise-tagging him on a 5th year?  Last I checked, the franchise tag for QB is just a shade under $30M per season.

I am not sure that Hurts stats matter if it looks like there is a good chance for the Eagles to get an elite QB in the draft.  3,600 21 and 11 is pretty mediocre.  I would hope they would not extend him.  I think the question for extension really only comes up if the Eagles go deep in the playoffs and that's attibutable to Hurts.  Absent that kind of year, there's no reason to think about extending him.  Just let him play on his 4th year deal or move on from him.

Looking at Simms list

You could argue Hurts could be anywhere from 21-31.  No way he gets into the top 20 with his performance last year.

Now for him to keep the job for 2023 he would have to sneak into the top 15 or why bother?

I can't really argue with Hurts at 25.  There are 2 issues I see.  Daniel Jones at 21 is just wrong.  I mean he has been worse than Sam Darnold.  Jameis might be interception prone but he's a far better passer than Jones. I would move James up to his spot.  Also, putting Goff behind Lawrence, Fields, Tua and Trubiskiy doesn't make much sense either.  He's limited but fairly proficient.  I don't see why you wouldn't move him closer to Wentz or Jimmy G.

Looking at that list from 15-31 then, how many of those guys does Hurts pass vs how many of those guys pass him?

As it stands at the moment -- Winston, Mariota, Trubisky, Tua, Goff, Lance, Darnold all are slated to be starters.  A few of those guys could have better seasons than Hurts.

I'd say Hurts is closer to 31 than he is to 15.

Isn't Hurts just the placeholder now until Strong is ready to take over?
