Eh.  He wasn’t cut, or fired.  He just wasn’t signed by anyone.  Kind of a stretch.  One can argue that Del Rio shouldn’t be let go because he’s a bad coach like Kaepernick was a bad QB.

Disagree.  He wasn't signed not because he wasn't good enough to play but because of what he said.  Del Rio is a backup in a sense as much as Kap.  Both had moments in the sun but better suited not being the guy.

Kap is a bad qb who didn’t deserve a starting job after he lost it in SF.  Was he good enough to be a backup in this league?  Absolutely.  And combining the fact that he would be a malcontent as a backup (earlier in this process) with the baggage of his self expression, none of that is worth it for a backup.  Backups are supposed to exist under the radar, not bring a circus to town.

Kapernick lost his job for expressing himself. And Del Rio is as much a mediocre coach as Kap is a QB, know what I mean?

Kaep lost his job because he was a lousy qb

Yeah.  We’ll definitely disagree with that all day.  Best to let it be at that.

Sounds good.

My son took a ball off the thumb while batting and now steps back with his back foot when swinging like he is trying to get away from the ball.

His batting has gone to crap with this new bad habit.

For those of you who played baseball, how did your dads, coaches, etc get you to stop fearing the ball?

My son is laying down watching TV and I just started throwing balls at him. Think thatll work?  He has the the home run derby tomorrow, and championship game Sunday so the fear has to get out of him now.

Yea, and it was a boring, predictable offense. That immediately stalled when playing a good team.

True, but the first 7 games when they tried to not be boring and predictable didn't work out too well.

Dig a hole with his back foot in the batters box as deep as he can in the time allotted before the first pitch.   I got it in 10th grade with a pitch to my head and it cracked my orbital, plus a torn retina.

Del Rio was spot on.

Alberto Del Rio sucks

Yep.  Just needs to get hit a few times to know it won’t hurt that bad.

Thats what I just did and he was laughing, but Im not sure it was effective yet.

I think over summer when we practice Im always going to tell him to take one off the shoulder/arm/leg first before he can start swinging. At some point he will realize its not killing him.

He has had it happen fielding grounders where he takes a bounce off the chest and still makes the play. Hes even taken one off the chin. Im not sure why batting is scarier to him now. But it rally Fd him up.

I dont think I can fix him in time for this weekends big events. Last game the special needs kid on his team had 2 hits, and he only had 0 cause the one he put in play was fielded by the 1st baseman.

I remember playing LL and we always would watch the other pitcher warm up to see how fast he throws, but it was more about being worried or not hitting the ball.   It’s the age and the stage.  He’ll grow out of it.

the coaches keep telling me how he is crushing it in the cages when they warm up before the game too. For some reason when he gets on the field, its different. You can see how much they are expecting a big extra base hit from him and how the wind goes out of their sails on the 3rd big whiff. And now its becoming a consistent thing.

I know he will grow out of it. But I hate that its the end of the season and this will probably be the lasting impression- his slump. Its his last year in minors. Next year he goes up to majors and the coaches in majors actually have a draft and have kids ranked and stuff.... He doesnt know that, and Im not going to tell him. But its stressing me out!

I guess it could work in his favor if hes ranked lower than his ability. He will get on a team with other all-stars in place and be like a secret weapon when he busts back out of it.

There's a huge difference between practicing with a coach and practicing on your own.  Practicing on your own often means that you are reinforcing the bad habits, because you can't watch yourself do it, and doing it wrong a bunch of times just makes it more ingrained.  On the flip side, getting that rep in front of your coach can lead to more fine tuning and a chance to get it fixed, so that the next 10 reps on your own are better than if that first rep wasn't with the coach and you just did it 11 times and each time you did it wrong.

I'll add, fewer reps in practice for fringe players means that those players have fewer opportunities to stand out to their coaches and it hurts their ability to 'beat the odds' and make the roster.  Ultimately, UDFAs need a chance to really shine in front of their coaches, and practicing privately isn't going to afford them much opportunity to open their coaches' eyes.

There are 24 hours in a day, and the goal should be to maximize efficiency within those hours.  Practicing 10 reps with a coach to correct and teach proper technique is better than 100 reps on your own when you are struggling to do it right.   There's not much in the way of instant feedback, or any feedback at all, about your success at changing the form or not.   Now, of course, they could go out and hire independent coaches to work with them in the offseason, but once again, that puts the fringe player at a disadvantage, because they don't have the resources of the higher profile players in terms of signing bonuses, etc.

The lack of reps in OTAs, TC, etc. lowers the overall level of the game.   Reps are always important.

But this was Phase 3 of the offseason. First couple of weeks, in April, players were with the Strength and Conditioning coaches. (Rookies miss that because it is before the draft so part of rookie minicamp is their introduction to it on a pro level.).  During Phase 2, they can (and do) conduct separates (defense on defense, offense on offense) for three weeks, which slide into OTAs, Phase 3, which can include a mandatory minicamp, with no contact but 7 on 7s, 11 on 11s with offense on defense.  Maximum of 10:days.  The only thing the Eagles shortened was Phase 3.  Now the Eagles reward with an ability to leave a day early, most teams do, and do a team building playground build, that also reminds players of the team’s commitment to the community.  I don’t understand all the complaints be rendered at the lack practice and time, especially if this approach reduces injury. The only "gave up”. four practices.  I also couldn’t give a damn about the couple of hour long practices the media gets to see.  Would you want a bunch of media clowns watching you during the mundane part of your workday.

  • Phase One: In the first two weeks of the program, activities are limited to strength and conditioning and physical rehabilitation.
  • Phase Two: Over the next three weeks of the program, on-field workouts may include individual player instruction and drills and team practices conducted on a "separates” basis. No live contact or offense vs. defense drills are permitted.
  • Phase Three: Over the next four weeks of the program, teams may conduct a total of 10 days of organized team practice activity, or OTAs. No live contact is permitted, but 7-on-7, 9-on-7, and 11-on-11 drills are permitted.

Tell him to watch Bryce Harper last year when he got hit in/near his face. Instead of being afraid and changing his stance he’s been the best hitter in baseball and was not afraid. Been raking since that happened

I freaking scream about hating Bryce Harper every time I put my sons BH cleats on. Those friggin things are so goddamn tight and hard to get his foot in to. He cant do it himself, and we struggle to even do it together. Also, the velcro strap that goes across the ankle isnt long enough. It barely reaches.

Tweet Bryce telling him your son’s predicament and your screaming about his cleats lol . Maybe he tweets back lol

Loved the look. And the black and gold match his bat. And his uniform has gold as well. He looks fresh. But I can not STAND putting his cleats on every game. Literally hate doing it.

Never doing the high tops again.

This might be a dumb question but what is 9 on 7 drills? I’ve never heard of that. Not even sure what purpose it serves with a clear disadvantage to someone.

Yes! I went through the same thing with my son all season long. Difficult as hell to get on his feet.

Looks like it’s defensive front 7 vs 12’s personnel minus the WRs. A heavy running alignment? Must be a short yardage drill

I didn’t know Ryan Howard was your son.  Wow

Sounds weird for OTA’s when they are in T-Shirts and Shorts with no pads and barely any physical activity. Running between the tackles with minimal contact? I can see why I never heard of it.
