I played college DL...granted it was D3 but I still have some knowledge of the position.  Just differing opinions.  I think the more repetition the better.  Contact or no contact.  And let's face it, even in just helmets, there's a helluva lot more contact than you think.  To me, the communication and cohesiveness that can be gained by OTA's and mini camps can go a long way.  It's just me opinion.  l

You are missing the point. No one disagrees with you that reps with contact are valuable. HOWEVER, contact is not allowed in these sessions. NFL rules. Given that, blocking is out, especially zone blocking. As for pass pro, you can practice your kick step forever but if the DL can't hit you or try to blow by you, it's a waste of time to do it in 11 on 11. Better to practice your kick step etc. with your OL coach who will drill you on balance, hand placement, arm action, knee bend and so on. There was a game last year when Mailata did not one, not two, but three kick steps on a DE who set wide. He didn't do that in OTA 11 on 11; he did that in OL sessions with Stoutland.

The key to zone blocking is double-team blocks, usually two on the same play. Of the two blockers, one hits the man square and the other drives into him on an angle, both hitting at the same time. If you can't hit, you can't practice. So, the OL sessions involve a lot of work on heavy bags, which you can hit. There is no doubt but that practice on these blocks is more helpful against live DL, but the rules don't allow it.

I'll try to say it again, just to stress the point. Practice on these blocks is more helpful against live DL, but the rules don't allow it.

You know who never played big college OL?  Jeff Stoutland.

No indication that Stout doesn’t support not doing no contact 11 on 11 drills.  In fact, watching what we see of his practices, I would suspect quite the opposite. Since that is what we were discussing.

There is a difference between not liking him as a player and hating him for everything he does. It’s an agenda for many posters at this point. He even got hate for writing a letter about Washington’s stadium.

Carson Wentz and Chris Long both had multiple media stories for their charitable acts. Wentz has his own clothing line. Yet the same hate wasn’t applied to them for that stuff.

they were actually good at their positions, wentz for awhile anyway

Yeah what an a-hole diva this Hurts is.  Serving crawfish, painting a kids wall, what's next?  Is this **** going to be doing some Make A Wish visits or help rebuild some family's home that got destroyed by a tornado?

Purposefully omitting my next line?  There are some guys who do all of the good work and you never hear a peep or see a picture of them doing it.  Hurts just seems to always be front and center whether it's media driven or self promoted.

I prefer people who do good things without needing to show it to the world.  NOT saying he is doing that but the media is making it look that way and that's half my issue.

The media has a hard on for Jalen Hurts and it's nauseating.  OHHH look at QB1 serving crawfish.  How can you NOT want him to be your quarterback?

Carson Wentz starts food truck that gives away thousand of dollars of food and raises money for the needy...where was the outpouring of love for him?  Carson wasn't perfect either but just comparing the situation.

Again, just to clarify.  I'm not saying Hurts is a diva.  It's great that he's embracing Philly.  I hope he proves all of us on here wrong and takes a big step.  I'm also saying he has 100% shown tendencies, as small as they may be, that the Hurts So Good brand could be his biggest focus and it could turn in to more than we want.

Must be a bum then. And if he is content without 11 on 11, he must be wrong.

I guess I don't know the rules enough.  What constitutes as contact?  Does that mean you can't do any hand slapping, rip and pull or any close contact OL/DL drills?

That has nothing to do with charitable acts or making a brand for yourself. Hurts has some serious limitations in his game as of today. Hating him for charitable acts, branding, or writing a letter about a bad work environment is just nothing more than petty.

This hate is the reason when a poster says "I want Hurts to succeed” it ruins all credibility to the statement.

Carson Wentz had actual ESPN segments about his charitable work. His food truck had local news interviews and multiple articles in both indy and philly. It was all over the place in the media about the stuff he was doing and it got a ton of love.

Pretty much. OTAs are not supposed to feature live contact, per the league's collective bargaining agreement. NFL teams are supposed to wait until the pads come on in training camp to really increase the intensity level. As we've seen over the past few days, the NFL isn't afraid to put the hammer down on teams that violate offseason workout rules.

What defines live contact is much like Justice Stewart's definition of pornography.

In practice, at least with the Eagles, there are no OL/DL contact drills at all, at least that I've heard of. There are a lot of individual sessions on the side or after practice where players work on moves. They bang a little bit.

I was a huge Wentz fan when he was here.  The problem with Carson for many fans was that he wasn't Nick Foles.  It also now seems apparent that behind the scenes and in the locker room there is something about how he conducts himself that severely turns some people off.

Hurts by all accounts are that he's genuine, modest and a hard worker whom has the respect and endearment of his teammates and coaches.

Sorry, I need to clarify what I mean by media.  I don't watch ESPN or any of that stuff.  I get my Eagles news via the collection of Eagles beat writers on twitter.  Probably a mistake on my part but it's a put together list that keeps all of the tweets together.

Honestly, IMO, genuine and modest are two of the last things that come to my mind when I think of Jalen Hurts.  I'm only saying this based off of how he comes off in press conferences and social media.  Never met the guy so I could be off based but it's just how he comes off to me.

He's been coached up his entire life.  Every answer he has is some sort of coaches phrase or a saying of some sort.  I don't see that as genuine at all.  Comes off like a robot just picking the right script for the day.  As far as being modest...nope don't see that one bit.

I don't know how you can say he doesn't come off as genuine and modest.  Every press conference he's taking responsibility for losses and any bad plays and during the times of success he's praising his teammates and coaches. And you're right he's been coached up his whole life, this is who he is.  This is his personality and character that has been developed through his life as a coaches son.

I don't know, just something comes off the wrong way to me.  And to be clear, I thought Carson was just as bad with coach speak and catch phrases.

Brandon Graham is as genuine and as modest as they come.  Same with Jason Kelce.  Maybe part of it is age.  Hurts is young and part of a different generation.  A decade separates those two guys from Hurts.

There has just been no indication at all from anyone in college or the pros who has played with him or coached him that suggests that Jalen is putting on a fake media persona.

Brandon Graham is just a completely different personality type.

I guess you were today years old when you figured out the pro athletes might attract media attention.

What's your next discovery, that companies might think that famous people might help them market their products?

I think you are making a pretty good argument that you are more shalo than deep.

The problem is not that he is marketing his product.  The problem is that he is marketing a product that stinks.

You mean genuine and authentic?  I kid.  That's what it comes down to.  We all gravitate towards different personality types.  Some people might hate BG's personality.  BG and Kelce are guys I would be buddies with in a heartbeat.

Yeah but which player you want to be friends with whose personalities you gravitate towards doesn't have to do with whether Hurts or anyone else is genuine or authentic just because they have more of a laid back personality that you don't like.

Just realized we got a Tort and a Tartt in the same day.

Yup. I truly don't believe Hurts is going to be The Guy here unfortunately, but the things people around here give him crap for here are ridiculous.

Even the "swag" comments are dumb. The dude will get a new haircut and put on some sunglasses and people want to bish about attention seeking behavior.  Meanwhile here's his backup who is beloved:

Hurts can't read a defense and has a mediocre at best arm. Just stick with that. You really don't need more than that.

3 minutes ago, 4for4EaglesNest said:

You know the deal about the sunglasses was because he was wearing them during practice, right?  You know it’s nothing like Minshew being goofy like in the picture you shared, right? You don’t see the difference?

Good point, Minshew has never worn anything goofy during practices right?

Again, Hurts isn't currently a good NFL passer. It isn't hard to come up with criticism. The reaching isn't necessary.

Exactly. The words genuine and authentic don’t seem to apply to the people who say I hope he succeeds while criticizing every part of his character. In the same breath they praise other players for the same characteristics.
