The Josh Allen and Hurts comp never made sense to me. Allen had outrageous raw talent, Hurts doesn't.

You want a Josh Allen comp? It's this kid:

I’m fascinated by this dude. However it’s probably due to the complete lack of talent and raw skill we currently have at the position.  Regardless, I am excited to watch him this season.

It’s been a solid few hours on the blog.

Is Hurts getting any reps in during the preseason?   Would be kinda stupid not to get some live game throws in.

If I were the coaches I'd give him at least a couple drives and tell him he can't run.  Stay in the pocket and make quick decisions throwing the ball.

I agree. Hurts needs to take every opportunity to get some work in.

And, what's the sense in scrambling for a first down? Throw the damn ball.

If he gets any drives his main objective will be to not get hurt. If that means scramble (which it probably will) then he’ll do that.

Gotta be realistic. I like Hurts running more than throwing.

He’s been running his whole life.  It’ll be like riding a bike when he tucks and runs on third down in the regular season.  No need to risk injury doing it in preseason.

To me if they sit him all 3 preseason games and he gets no live reps, then it kinda makes it look like he has arrived and doesn't need it.  But truth is he hasn't arrived and hasn't proven anything.

We all know he can run.  He's proven that and is elite when it comes to scrambling.

Hey if he wants to have a long career and make 200+ million on his next contract then he needs to improve as a passer.

The next QB that is a better scrambler than passer to win a SB will be the 1st.  It hasn't happened.

I doubt he gets any live reps in the preseason, which is ridiculous.  It was even more ridiculous when he didn’t get any last year.  I really hope this team plans on running the ball down the other team’s throat the first 6 weeks of the season, because they will not be prepared to execute anything in the passing game with these limited reps, practices, and extremely limited QB.

Interesting to read about the other QBs since I haven't seen much in them.

In fairness to Hurts, it’s not like any of the Eagles’ quarterbacks are looking great. Gardner Minshew has been up-and-down at best. Carson Strong and Reid Sinnett aren’t impressing anybody.

Gardner Minshew threaded a tight window in the middle of the field to hit Deon Cain. Later, he threw too late to Calcaterra on a curl route and the ball was knocked down. Minshew also had a good throw over the middle to Greg Ward but then held the ball too long and got "sacked” by Josh Sweat.

Strong had some weak throws this morning. He threw a bad, wobbly pass into coverage with no receiver around and was lucky not to be picked off. Strong threw a ball with not much juice on it right to Christian Elliss for an interception in 7-on-7s. Strong’s best throw was when he aired it out with good touch to Lance Lenoir, who dropped the ball. Early on, Strong seems more like a practice squad candidate than a threat to make the roster.

Strong is also throwing to people who are going to get cut. After 3 practices he thinks he is a PS candidate vs 3 years of Hurts not being able to throw?  OK.

Something tells me he will find his knee nagging and put away for another year

For all the I am a hater who wants him to fail crowd, I have a couple Hurts cards.

Pre-season games matter only for the scrubs trying to make the PS.

Sirianni values the scrimmages with other teams more than pre-season games, b/c he can script them with the opposing HC and see how players look in different situations.

Your roster players may only play one game worth of PT in 3 exhibition games, and you have no control of situations (red zone, etc) so you don't get to see some things that will determine the "winners" of contests for roster spots.

There's actually a lot more reps in the scrimmages than in exhibition games.

As far as players - we're still in July, let's see where they are 2-3 weeks from now - especially veterans who are more focused on working on things than impressing the media. The rookies and last year PS guys are still climbing the learning curve. As they get closer to the first cut down day, the intensity will rise.

There was nothing wrong with his post. He's right about the value of PS games vs. scrimmages with other teams.

seems about right.

That was in the context of discussing who was the worst Eagle draft pick ever. There were several nominees. I said Kevin Allen in a landslide. Buddy Ryan said his only value was to stand around and kill grass. He was ranked as the fourth-worst NFL player of all time by Deadspin. And then of course he was convicted of rape and sentenced to fifteen years, which was what Afan referred to.

The problem with this, as I pointed out last year, games are not scripted.  The team needs reps in preseason games to be able to adapt to new situations.

When you have a scripted environment, you know what defense you are seeing, and you are seeing similar results after 1st and 2nd down.  In a game, there is multitude of outcomes, and multitude of defensive looks you see on the following down based on the outcome of the previous down.  Need to have live reps to practice responding to the previous play and the current defensive alignment.
