I'm sorry I brough such a depressing topic into the blog.  A little back story without too much detail. I met my friend 12 years ago during an AF commissioning program. He was on top of the world

It's not so much whether they played better or worse. Clearly they were statistically better in a lot of ways. It's hard for me to accept that DVOA rating when all the unmanipulated stats say something else, at least to me. Especially in PPG. Part of that was Gannon's insistence on avoiding big plays, which in large part was due to the lack of team speed on defense. Keep them in front of you and expect them to make a mistake. The good QBs didn't, the bad QBs did.

This year he has much faster LBs. All that underneath stuff where we looked so helpless should be a thing of the past. Alex Singleton led the team in tackles. Ugh. Now he's long gone. They added three huge pieces in the front in Davis, White, and Reddick. Dean and Taylor are fast too.

I grant freely that we looked helpless last year in a lot of games. Part of that was players being asked to do things they weren't good at and part of that was that the players were not very good. The first part of that was due in part (of part) to Gannon installing his system. If you don't have a decent NT why ask someone to play NT? Well, it's a different defense and the other 10 guys have to learn to play it. It was installation. This year they have the NT and the rest of the guys should know what to do because of last year's installation.

I completely give Gannon a mulligan for 2021. No excuses for this year, however. His job is on the line.

It would make me much happier, though, if Howie could somehow get us a good safety.

The LB position also has competition for snaps for the first time in a long, long time.  For years, it's been a case of who can play, now it's a case of who is playing best?  Safety is the new LB from previous years though

So we lost a practice?

Disappointing…I expected them to repeat their undefeated practice record from last year.

Barry Goldwater does have a scholarship named after him but I agree.

He is. Outside of stat collecting INTs, that is the Diggs reality. A perfect Cowboys player; media loves him, can produce a wow play every so often for ESPN to salivate over, but dig deep and it's not as good as perceived.

Any reason why we're better with 1 on 1 and 7 on 7 but not team?

1v1 and 7v7's are designed to be more advantageous to offense. They should really always win them.

I think unmanipulated stats are relevant only when they help my arguments.

I am not saying that Gannon had great talent last year.  I just think the talent he had was comparable to what Schwartz had.  Part of Gannon's philosophy was to keep safeties deep and play zone coverage which led to less sacks, a higher completion percentage and less big plays. I have also read or heard that the Eagles played some of the highest percentage of base (4-3) defense against 11 personnel.  I have not been able to verify that but I'm pretty sure Bo Wulf said it on a BWF podcast.  Getting caught in that type of personnel setting is problematic especially when you have bad LBs.  I think a bend but don't break defense is OK but isn't going to beat good teams.  The team did not beat any good teams last season.  The best win, against NO, was with a nobody at QB.  He did not adjust the defense to be more aggressive even when they were getting picked apart by better QBs.  I am concerned we are in for more of the same.

I agree that Davis and the upgraded LBs should make a big difference.  I really hope Taylor is able to stay healthy.  He looked very good in the game against Denver last season before he was hurt.  He also looked good in pre-season.   I hope that Epps continues to look good.  I hope that the improvement leads to better results across the board.  I hope to be pleasantly surprised.

I can’t believe people still want Wilson it was a joke before any snap LAST year, now absolutely laughable

But part of the analysis goes to field position and when the Eagles went 3 and out, Siposs was awful.  Stats alone don’t tell the whole story.  Schwartz’s line play was superior to Gannon’s last year.  Both seaking the edge and pressuring the QB.  I expect it will be better this year.  And the play of the LBs should improve as you suggest.

Depends how good we think it is.  Last season the Eagles were 12th in points scored and 18th in points allowed.

Not sure I'd put them as a top 10 offense just yet.

Hard to say without seeing it. They usually treat the 11v11's like a game where there's down's and distance. Didn't really see any tweets besides Hurts was 3/4  but no TD's so guessing it was mostly short stuff and the drive eventually stalled. When the practice notes articles come out they are more descriptive. I wouldn't take anything happening to mean anything specifically though.
