I'm sorry I brough such a depressing topic into the blog.  A little back story without too much detail. I met my friend 12 years ago during an AF commissioning program. He was on top of the world

I feel like it could be Dickerson this season. It almost has top be someone on the OL, could give it to Johnson or Mailata too.

I was watching some homer show for the first time on YouTube, Jakib Sports I think, and they posed this question. The host without even pausing said it was Lane Johnson, no question. His cohost agreed.

My instinctive reaction would have been Kelce, our lone All-Pro. His quality of play is most definable of anyone we have by the fact he’s been All-Pro 4 of the last 5 years.

And then what muddles it even more is PFF stated that not only has Johnson not even been our best OT, but Mailata was a top 3 tackle in the world last season.

It’s interesting how it’s not just 1 clear guy like during the Peters years

Color me surprised.  Live action is overrated.  Our basically a rookie QB couldn't learn anything from unscripted reps in game action.

But does that make him a better player than someone at a position with a higher ceiling?

You framed the question as "best at what they are asked to do".

Now, if Lovato was the best LS in the league, I wouldn't suggest that he is the best player on the team.  But Lane plays RT.

The only maybe-not-best-in-the-league-but-better-than-Lane candidates would be Brown, Slay, or Kelce.  Mailata is close.  Smith, Dickerson, and possibly Davis in a year or so.

A serious answer?   Really?

Best at their job? Color me Kelce.

Are you changing the question from your original intent?

But due to the talent at LT, you could say Mailata is better at what he’s asked to do than Johnson even though he may not be ranked as highly amongst his positional peers

Original intent is best football player on the team

Wentz made his oline look way worse than they were two years in a row. He's going to make Washington's oline look bad this year.

Both things can be true. Wentz definitely didn’t help. Wentz was atrocious in 2020 and didn’t help himself holding onto the ball. However in 2020 only kelce was the only projected starter to play every game or 75% of the games. Lane started 7 games, brooks started 0, seumalo started 9 and dillard played 0, peters was moved then replaced by mailata who was starting for the first time for 10. Having Matt pryor start 10 games and opeta started 2.

here’s their projected starters last year and how many games they started (also some games they left with injury)

fischer- 15 starts

nelson— 13 starts

branden smith— 11 starts

Ryan Kelly— 14 starts

Glowinski— 14 starts

so combined starts missed was 18 starts out of a possible 85 and a lot of them overlapped.

Matt pryor started 5 games, Davenport who was atrocious last year started 4, Danny Pinter started 3 and Chris reed started 6. The colts oline missed games at the same time and  when some guys came back. Wentz was an issue so was their injury situation along their oline.

You could say that.  I won't.  Mailata is really good, but gets a perception boost from where he was drafted.  Lane is pretty remarkable. We are just used to it.

Here’s a random blog question: Who would you vote as single best football player on the team? Not most important, just best at what they’re asked to do.

Jordan Mailata

Yeah I agree; also perception boost based on the old school concept of LT’s generally being the more regarded player.

If Lane was a LT he wouldn’t need Sirianni pumping that tshirt revenue

The qualifier at the end is what confused me, I guess.   I believe Lane Johnson is a better RT than Mailata is a LT.  Now, the issue with Johnson is whether or not he can stay healthy enough to remain that.  But, when healthy, he's easily the best RT.  Mailata could become as good a LT as Johnson is a RT, but he's not there yet.  He's still getting by a bit on his athleticism.  His techniques need some more tweaking.

Yeah you got the meaning. Not comparing to others at the same position around the league, just compared to other eagles at different positions if positional value is eliminated

Not to be flippant, but I could make that throw when I was 21 too.  Doing it on an empty field with your buddy is pretty easy.

Exactly.

One of Wentz's biggest drawbacks is holding the ball too long and not taking the checkdown, but no QB in the NFL could have had a successful season with the Eagles 2020 OL.
