No it doesn’t.  The goal is to go deep in the playoffs and win Super Bowls.  Having an all pro TE and then a really good back up isn’t a necessity for any team to make a deep postseason run.  TE2 isn’t going to make or break a season.  Especially when you don’t have QB1.

Having 3 good tight ends helped the Eagles win SB52

So it's not a big deal but if we lose Goedert, the Eagles have to change the offense and replace him with 3 guys?

I liked Calcaterra at OU.  If he can be THAT guy, I'm not as worried.  So far he's been on the shelf.  We'll see if he can stay healthy.

Kind of but not all on the same play.  Rather rotating the three.  All can block and all can catch.

Huge mistake to push a hammy or groin in TC.  They probably saw enough to get a taste of Calcaterra early on.  Suspect we see more in the scrimmage practices this week. He really didn’t slip at SMU, just the offenses in that conference are more spread.  Although, I really like UH’s TE, Christian Trahan.

The issue is if Goedert gets hurt, which he's missed games every season since entering the league.  The drop off from Goedert to Stoll is drastic.  They have potential Pro Bowler starting then a bunch of the Jaggiest JAGS ever.

TE isn't the focal point of the offense like it has been the past 3+ years. The Eagles have 2 very solid receivers in Brown and Smith. Brown can work the middle of the field as good as any receiver. I'm not saying you don't need to pay any attention to the backup TE's, but it's not all that high on importance. We've basically traded the luxury of having great TE depth for great WR depth, and we will see if it pays off.

Sure.  But it’s not a requisite.  Celek was on his way out, Burton was more of an H back and Ertz was a stud.  Buts just because it helped, (wasn’t the main reason) 6 years ago doesn’t mean it should be replicated.  Just like 12 personnel.  Would we want to have depth at all positions?  Of course.  But it’s nowhere near as important as RB, Safety or Corner.  Especially in this offense.

Not saying we have to replicate it and I know they aren't going to solve the problem this year.  I just would like to have a weapon at TE2 so you can bring him in and have a mismatch.

Steelers cut Genard Avery.

Doesn't that make a case for my argument?  There was no worry because the Eagles had two really good tight ends.

You know damn well if Stoll is in the game that the Eagles are running the ball.  Same with when they would trot out JJAW last year.

When you had Ertz and Goedert, both were threats in the passing game and while Ertz wasn't great, both would block too.  Having Goedert in the game didn't telegraph the play.

It telegraphed it was a pass because Ertz was useless as a run blocker, which is one of the reasons 12 with ertz and goedert was ineffective that and Ertz wasn't beating nickels anymore.

12 is so much more effective when both guys can block and while stoll isn't a guy whose a threat to make anything happen with the ball in his hands one still has to cover him.

Not sure how Calcaterra is as a run blocker but if he showed he could block he and goedert could be dangerous in 12.

Good stuff, JR.  Reminds me of the two way conversations you used to have with D20.

I loved those misdirection pulls.  Sure looked like a running play. Then, boom, hit the slant with only a couple of defenders still on that side.  Could be a thing of beauty with a YAC star like Brown.  That’s a combination of Stout and what we heard last year about Sirianni when he  was hired.  The set up looked like a RPO but I suspect that was part of the disguise.

The only thing that bothered me was the illegal man downfield call on Jurgens on the RPO.  I mean, I really doubt that call was accurate and if it was, it wasn’t more than a foot. But it shows that passes on the RPO have to come out fast.  The same is true with those misdirection pulls.

In college the Linemen get 3 yards downfield on a RPO and only 1 yard in the NFL. Go back to the Super Bowl and Kelce was definitely further than a yard past the line on a few RPO passes which makes me believe Belichick was one of the coaches whining to the refs about calling it correctly. As silly as it seems that’s probably a big difference for Jurgens especially in the moment.

Ok, totally off any topic that anyone in here is talking about but this seems like just as good a thread to tell this story as any, so I'll post it in here.

So, as everyone may know, my mother has lung cancer and has had some strokes (which she's had near full recovery from). Her oncologist of the past 2+ years, decided that she no longer wanted to give her any treatments. Not because it wasn't working (it is), but because the doctor didn't think that my mother's 'quality of life' was good. So we switched to a new oncologist, who thinks that the determination of 'quality of life' is best left to the person living that life.

Anyway, she's been on the new chemo for about a month. I noticed that the nurse that administers the transfusion, had a Patriots logo on her cart of supplies. So I pointed to it and asked if that was hers. To which, she said yes.

Well, I just so happened to be wearing a Super Bowl LII Champions hat, so I kind of tugged in the brim and winked at her lol She said "I know... I noticed it last week. But don't worry, I'll still be nice to your mom anyway!"

Another nurse chimed in and said... well, you don't even want to know who my team is. I almost said "Just as long as it isn't the Cowboys!" but before I could say it, she said "Dallas..." lol

Out of curiosity, what part of his post seemed like snark? I took it as general like of the subject matter and sharing what he saw so that others could comment on it and possibly share their views on it/if they saw the same things. I, for one, love the more in depth posts as I don't always get to watch the games and prefer that type of post to someone complaining about Hurts again or saying something that doesn't forward the conversation (hence why I don't post too often).

I'd put Davis at FB and Mailata at RB.  Mailata the ex ruby player is used to handle the ball.  Davis is good at pushing through big bodies and probably never carry a football.

I want to run the wing-t with Jurgens as the FB, Mailata as the TB and Davis as the WB.  Then you can have a lot of misdirection out of the backfield including a potential pass back to Davis out of the backfield.

He makes the mistakes a lot of GMs in all sports make, that you're a couple players away so I'll just tweak things (extend a veteran, reach in the draft) to get over the top (or back to the top).

He's a smart guy who learns from his mistakes, the SB hangover I'm sure left a bad taste in his mouth - he overestimated a team based on a fluke season.

Notice he's far more focused on team building and retaining assets during this rebuild cycle v 2016.

But I also think a difference is the type of coaching staff, Reid at the end pushed for the dream team, Chip was not a development oriented HC (despite coming out of college), Pederson was a veteran's coach. I think Howie has also learned from that experience, if your coaching staff is more developmentally oriented, you can focus more on the draft and waiver wire and less on plug and play veterans.

They traded for Brown, but he's only 24, Tartt was waiver wire, Anderson waiver wire, Cain and Pascal, and the entire secondary it seems (or trades with late round draft picks).

The only money FAs are White (1yr), Bradberry (1yr) and Reddick (3yr), in their prime years.

Compare to 2016, when much of the team was built through free agency and long-term deals.

I don't think 2017 was a fluke.  A bit lucky, sure, but every SB winner is.  That was a well-built team, even if it had an extremely brief crescendo.  The fluke, IMO, was that they got into the playoffs and looked more competitive than they were in 2018 & 2019.

Watched the first half again, just to concentrate on the OL (of course) in the run game.

Mostly we ran inside zone. There were a few pin-and-pull runs - where Jurgens really shone; we ran a couple of powers - that's where the center blocks down and a guard pulls around him and leads the back into the A gap and we ran a trap in which Dillard pulled and blocked the DT on the far side of the center. Amazing what Stoutland can do with linemen who can run. More cool stuff: Stoutland pulled guards on pass plays and the throw came on a quick slant to the vacated side. Did it at least twice. How tough is that on an LB? He keys on the guard, follows him, and the ball goes through the area he just vacated. Nightmare for the LB and the DC.

I thought some of the slant routes that Minshew threw were RPOs.  So the guards are pulling as part of the run option.  I could be wrong but it's kind of an interesting way to design a pass protection and create a play action that maybe does more to freeze a LB than a fake handoff with no real movement from the o-line.

No real surprises here besides no Ward. Either he's not that hurt and will practice this week or he has a spot on the team already.

Or Howie will package him in a deal.

He hasn't practiced in about over two weeks now. I don't see why anyone would trade for him if he's hurt.
