California's a big state, is Newsome really despised so much that he'd lose in a head to head contest with Caitlin Jenner? Even just looking at democrats, seems like a lot of them would pull the lever for Newsome again despite whatever missteps he may have made. I'm not saying it wouldn't be closer than it should be, but to actually lose would be a huge surprise to me. I'm not that in touch with California politics though.

Carving out a lane to barely win a plurality is one thing, beating an incumbent head to head is another. Also, isn't Jenner a bit of a paradox in that she's against same sex marriage? Seems like that'd be a bit of a non-starter for many, no?

I think they don't have much power nationally, but they certainly have some in CA. That, combined with their general affinity for celebrities, would seem to make Jenner a viable candidate.

The centrist and conservative Californians will be by to tell you that CA isn't actually that liberal any moment now.

Seems like that'd be a bit of a non-starter for many, no? Pretty much. You either pay a fee (like 4k) or get 7,000 signatures and you are on the ballot. The ballot has 2 questions - first, should Newsom be recalled. Second, who should be elected governor. If a majority vote to recall, then the winner of the second question is the new governor.
