I know a woman who said on social media to defund the police, but then also got offended when her friends told her to take precautions before riding her bike on dark bicycle paths off of streets at night, because victims shouldn't have to change their behavior.  I don't know how many thieves and rapists read her posts and went straight because of it, though.

"This stretch of I-375 cuts like a gash through the neighborhood, one of many examples I have seen in communities across the country where a piece of infrastructure has become a barrier,” Buttigieg told the AP about the Detroit highway.

"With these funds, we’re now partnering with the state and the community to transform it into a road that will connect rather than divide,” he added. 

According to the AP: 

"Detroit’s project would create a slower-speed boulevard that aims to improve safety by removing a steep curve and adding LED lighting, while removing 15 old bridges and two stormwater runoff pump stations and building out wider sidewalks, protected bike lanes and pedestrian crossings."

In his role as head of the Transportation Department, Buttigieg has spoken directly of America’s racist infrastructure, and he’s placed a particular emphasis on road construction. And after Republicans threw public tantrums over his acknowledgment of racism built into American infrastructure, Buttigieg was taken aback.

"I’m still surprised that some people are surprised,” he said in a news conference last November, adding, "I don’t think we have anything to lose by confronting that reality.”

A Bloomberg report on neighborhoods destroyed by racist highway construction noted the impact I-375 had on once-bustling Black Bottom, noting that "few traces of the neighborhood remain aside from historical markers.”

A feature on the neighborhood published in Grist noted that "the destruction of the epicenters of Detroit’s Black life started with the condemnation of housing through the National Housing Act of 1949,” which trapped Black people in cramped, low-quality housing. And Grist said the problem continued "when the city received even more funds through the National Highway Act in 1956.” 

Thursday’s announcement included millions of dollars more for separate projects in Arizona, Colorado, New York and states across the country. The significant amount needed to resurrect Black Bottom and its surrounding areas shows how devastating America’s racist infrastructure has been. And it’s a sign a lot more money will be needed to correct the problem nationwide.

A federal grand jury indictment alleges that a **** Rapids man made violent threats against a U.S. senator.

Brendon Michael Daugherty, 35, appeared Friday in U.S. District Court in Minneapolis on charges of threatening to murder a United States official and interstate transmission of a threat.

Public court records do not identify the target of Daugherty's alleged threats other than to say the senator is not from Minnesota.

Daugherty remains in federal custody without bail in the Sherburne County jail. He's due back in court on Tuesday.

According to the indictment:

On June 11, Daugherty left two voicemail messages on the field office telephone of the senator.

In his first message, Daugherty said, "You and the Republican Party should be proud that you're pushing me to become a domestic terrorist. Have a nice [expletive] day. Can't wait to kill ya."

In the second message, he said, "I also just wanted to note, thank god the Republican Party is against gun control laws, because it would keep guns out of the hands of a person that was disabled and volatile like I am, but you guys are totally against that. So I may actually get to carry out my nefarious goals."

Field office staff retrieved and recorded the messages and reported them to U.S. Capitol Police.

On September 2, FBI agents with the spoke to Daugherty at his home. He told the agents he made the calls because the senator was "doing a bunch of stupid [expletive] with gun control," and that he wants politicians to "feel a little bit pressured."

Court records show that Daugherty was convicted in October 2018 of two felony counts for threatening on successive days in April to burn down a Pearle Vision store in Maple Grove and harm the employees. Daugherty was mad, according to the charges, over owing $80 for replacement eyeglasses.

Daugherty's criminal history also includes two convictions for theft and one each for aggravated robbery, burglary, property damage, credit card fraud and fifth-degree assault
