The proposed rehabilitation of Welcome Park includes expanded interpretation of the Native American history of Philadelphia and was developed in consultation with representatives of the indigenous nations of the Haudenosaunee, the Delaware Nation, Delaware Tribe of Indians, the Shawnee Tribe, and the Eastern Shawnee Tribe of Oklahoma. The reimagined Welcome Park maintains certain aspects of the original design such as the street grid, the rivers and the east wall while adding a new planted buffer on three sides, and a ceremonial gathering space with circular benches. The Penn statue and Slate Roof house model will be removed and not reinstalled

So one of her students died of a drug overdose and this is how the school's principal responded...

She deleted her entire account over the backlash.

Here's the site.  They say they are removing the other "statue", which is a model of that I am pretty sure his house looked like.  Looking into it, I think some of it is just that the plaza is stale, rather than cancel culture, to be honest.  But sections on Native tribes in the spot where William Penn lived is just virtue signalling.  I'm sure

The reason why I think it's about the spot, rather than cancelling William Penn, is because that park could be better than it is.  I didn't know it existed.  While there are some historic buildings adjacent to it (Thomas Bond House next door, and City Tavern across the street), having the side of that condo as the backdrop makes it look like the plaza has been forgotten for the last 25 years.

I would personally keep the Penn statue, though.  It marks the site of his house.  That's significant.  Just an empty plaza with markings on the pavement doesn't mean much unless you really know what was there.  The statue ties people visiting the park to the history.   I can see how the statue needs to go for a complete overhaul, but I would not be surprised if some DEI idiots think the statue needs to go because Penn was White as well.  Given the polarization of statues, more transparency on the plan would've been nice.

She forgot to end her tweet with "YOLO”

People on here are really upset about the removal of a small William Penn statue as part of a project to redo the park?

I’m not sure if upset quite captures it. It’s literally 1984.

The tweet literally starts with the phrase "We need your input…”, but it must be more full-filling to rage post about cancel culture and the mistreatment of statues.

First they came for the slate roof house models and I said nothing...

Yeah, definitely no agenda and totally open to anything, which is why the starting point is removing the statue of the man to which the park is dedicated.

And Gov Shapiro just posted on Twitter that he went to the Biden administration and got the decision reversed, so the Penn statue will stay.

All Shapiro does is win.

Overwhelming political pressure in a swing state during an election year was effective?

Remember, these are the same Taliban wannabes who said Washington and Jefferson statues wouldn’t get torn down.

Give it some time…

Im just posting about how Shapiro is an amazing centrist governor of a purple state.

We can post ad nauseum about what could be, but let’s take a moment to enjoy what is.

Is he that great? How’s Philly’s crime rate? Is the population still shrinking? I genuinely don’t know. I heard he did a good job when that bridge collapsed.

It’s not that deep dude. I don’t pay attention to PA state level politics that closely. I have friends who know him since he’s from the county I grew up in. That’s about it.

Violent crime rates decrease significantly in Philadelphia for 2023, authorities say. Homicides are now down more than 20%, non-fatal shootings are down 28%, and violent crime is down roughly 7%.

Shapiro seems to be doing pretty well so far.  Our gas is still way too f'n high in PA compared to other states though.
