January 7, 20241 yr Quote The proposed rehabilitation of Welcome Park includes expanded interpretation of the Native American history of Philadelphia and was developed in consultation with representatives of the indigenous nations of the Haudenosaunee, the Delaware Nation, Delaware Tribe of Indians, the Shawnee Tribe, and the Eastern Shawnee Tribe of Oklahoma. The reimagined Welcome Park maintains certain aspects of the original design such as the street grid, the rivers and the east wall while adding a new planted buffer on three sides, and a ceremonial gathering space with circular benches. The Penn statue and Slate Roof house model will be removed and not reinstalled

Looking into it, I think some of it is just that the plaza is stale, rather than cancel culture, to be honest. But sections on Native tribes in the spot where William Penn lived is just virtue signalling. I'm sure The reason why I think it's about the spot, rather than cancelling William Penn, is because that park could be better than it is. I didn't know it existed. While there are some historic buildings adjacent to it (Thomas Bond House next door, and City Tavern across the street), having the side of that condo as the backdrop makes it look like the plaza has been forgotten for the last 25 years. I would personally keep the Penn statue, though. It marks the site of his house. That's significant. Just an empty plaza with markings on the pavement doesn't mean much unless you really know what was there. The statue ties people visiting the park to the history. I can see how the statue needs to go for a complete overhaul, but I would not be surprised if some DEI idiots think the statue needs to go because Penn was White as well. Given the polarization of statues, more transparency on the plan would've been nice.

Yeah, definitely no agenda and totally open to anything, which is why the starting point is removing the statue of the man to which the park is dedicated.

I heard he did a good job when that bridge collapsed.
