The obvious historical example being Nixon and Kennedy. Trump's problem is that the people that respond to his brand are already in his camp. As always, he needs to convey competency to reach who he needs to reach, not be the insult clown, but can't do it.

I think the electorate is mostly pathos driven. They’re going to look around and make a relative judgement between Trump and Biden. Being the insult clown is, well, insulting to the office of the presidency — but I don’t think it matters. What it will come down to is who people feel is stronger. In that sense, being an insult clown can be very effective if the opponent doesn’t handle it well. That’s actually kind of the political genius of being an insult clown. It puts your opponent in a really difficult position: you can act like an adult and hope the electorate gives you credit for it or you can try to out insult him and hope you land more zingers. In the former, you can look weak for letting the attacks go unchallenged and in the latter you might end up looking like the bigger fool. Say what you will about Trump, but he really does put his opponents in a difficult situation by doing this.

As a sitting President, he has the state of the country to answer for, which makes his insults either self-defeating or just completely out of left field. It's why he's had so much trouble zinging Biden in this cycle. Everything pales in comparison to his incompetency and the personal state of the people he's trying to reach. Another thing working against him is that his style isn't surprising anymore. We've all seen it for 4 years and the shock of "I can't believe a Presidential candidate said that" has long-since worn off.

But it's probably best to just let them set his expectations unreachably high. Trump is a horrible debater, I have no illusions about that. That being said, I think Biden is going to struggle on the issues. He has to walk the tightrope of keeping the progressives engaged without turning off the masses....and, of course, he has to complete sentences. In reality, the candidate that makes the least embarrassing gaffs probably wins in these debates.

The news cycle seems to tell a different story. news sells its product to a still comparatively small segment of society. most of them have only around 5 million viewers per night, which is significant but there's a lot more people in the country that AREN'T watching news. most people living day-to-day are sick and tired of hearing about how crappy the president is.

But I disagree that Biden has been shy about telling progressives to ef' off. They're salty as hell right now, and I'm enjoying every minute of it. I think Biden has done the calculus and knows the moderates are there for the taking, and represent a much more important cache of voters than progressives. Progressives are only numerous in already heavily blue districts; they are not a sizable voting bloc in swing states compared to moderates. You win moderates, you might lose a little lead in NY and CA, but you gain in PA/WI/NC/FL/etc. The latter is much more important.

To date it seems like he is VERY concerned about losing the progressive turnout as they are such a fickle bunch. Partnering with Bernie, picking Kamala etc. If he's not worried about keeping progressives engaged he should be.

(WBAY) - A Neenah man had a flamethrower, smoke grenades and fireworks during a demonstration in Green Bay Saturday night, according to police and prosecutors. Matthew Banta, 23, is charged with obstructing an officer and two counts of felony bail jumping. The criminal complaint says Banta "is known to be a violent Antifa member who incites violence in otherwise relatively peaceful protests.” Police say he’s known as "Commander Red.” Green Bay police say they were called for "a whole bunch of white people with sticks, baseball bats and helmets headed... towards the police” on Walnut St. near Webster Ave. "I don’t know who comes to a protest with a baseball bat for anything other than criminal or illegal activity,” said Green Bay Police Chief Andrew Smith. A responding officer says he saw four individuals walking towards a protest with baseball bats. One man was wearing a metal helmet with goggles and military-style gear with multiple pouches, and was carrying an Antifa flag. When the officer pulled his squad car in front of the group, they ran away. The officer caught Banta, who was carrying the flag, and says Banta "dropped into the fetal position and began crying.” He accused the officer of lying on him; the officer replied nobody was on him. Banta acknowledged he was headed to the Green Bay protest but denied he was planning to incite a riot. A Brown County Court Commissioner set a $2,500 cash bond during his initial appearance on Monday. Fing Commander Red

That's actually false. https://www.sfexaminer.com/news/wiener-legislation-seeks-to-end-blatant-discrimination-in-sex-offender-registry-laws/ Currently, while consensual sex between 15- to 17-year-olds and a partner within 10 years of age is illegal, vaginal intercourse between the two does not require an offender to register as a sex offender. Other forms of intercourse such as oral and anal intercourse require sex offender registration. Basically, the current rules on the book state that consensual vaginal sex between two consenting persons 10 years apart when one is a minor is illegal but the judge in the case can determine whether the person has to register as a sex offender. However, if the sex is oral or anal then the judge has no choice, the person must be registered as a sex offender. This is bringing the law for anal/oral sex into sync with the vaginal sex law.

Lowest common denominator — the progressive way!
September 3, 20205 yr Just now, TEW said: Lowest common denominator — the progressive way! yeah I'm not really weighing in here on whether or not the law is good or bad. it's more about whether it's being equally applied. you claimed homosexuals were getting some additional latitude legally; that's just false. this bill is to give judges the ability to make the same considerations for "gay" sex as for straight. @bobeph is probably on board. in terms of the law, I don't actually think it's even that bad. you're letting a judge decide. if some 19 year old dude bangs his 17 year old girlfriend (or boyfriend), it's technically illegal but should the guy really have to register as a sex offender? I don't think so. if a judge looks at a 15-year-old girl who was banged anally by a 25-year-old man, the judge still has the latitude to classify the guy as a sex offender. I think giving judges the ability to decide on the merits of the individual cases makes some sense here. the 10 year number seems a bit arbitrary and maybe higher than I'd want it - I think 5 years would be better - but this isn't exactly as you presented it.
