My personal feeling is and has been for a couple months that Zach Wheeler and the Phillies would both like to have him going forward. But I don’t think the Phillies want to pay him the years he wants. I think they’d give him 40 million a year. But I think they give him 40 million for 3 years with a team option for a fourth. I think he wants five years and $40 million per. I think that’s why they’d be in Jordan Montgomery if he became available for the right price on a three and maybe a 4 year contract. I think it gives them some flexibility that if they can’t get Wheeler done that they at least have Montgomery, Nola, Suarez, and painter in 2025. With the guys who are available in free agency right now, you might be better off just paying those guys and keeping your prospects. Like I’m not so sure you’re gonna get a better player at the deadline then Jordan Montgomery, and if you do you’re gonna have to likely give up somebody like Crawford and Abel to do it. 1 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

There’s that scenario that exists. It’s why I’ve said if you get Montgomery on a 3-4 year deal like they did with Castellanos you get him on a good contract and don’t have to give up any prospects. Flexibility is nice but you also have to realize at the deadline you are dealing away prospects and new playoff format not as many sellers.
