At least they can be sellers at the deadline and potentially get some prospects injected into the farm. Not sure who teams would want. Probably segura, didi, Bruce and potentially Realmuto depending on the package they got (I’m under the assumption if Realmuto gets to free agency some team will overpay him and the Phils use the excuse about pandemic and revenue)

Yeah they have their excuse for not signing Realmuto, Middleton is a fraud

Like you can see this coming from like a mile away. They had an extra 3-4 months where they could’ve been negotiating with him And get a deal done since they weren’t playing baseball. Heck they’ve had 1.5 years to get a deal done. And they still didn’t get a contract done. Which tells me JT Realmuto believes he can go to the market and get a number that he really wants and if the Phillies don’t come matching it he’s just gonna leave. I am betting some team gives him like a seven-year $175 million contract and the Phillies don’t match it. I think the dodgers and Yankees are out. But i think Red Sox, Mets (depending on who’s the owner), angels and nats are players in this.

Sounds like rotation will now be Nola/Wheeler/Arrieta/Howard with Eflin and Pivetta battling it out for the last spot, again.

They need to keep on eye on Howard's mileage.  And I don't even trust VV in the pen.  I'd leave him in AAA and bring him up for spot starts as injuries dictate over the course of the year.

What am I missing here?  Why was VV 3rd in the rotation?  Are they saving Arrieta to get slaughtered by a good team?  

I don't like the following about the capless MLB, but it's just the way things are:

When the small market teams draft a star who is about to price themselves out of the franchise, they trade him to a large market team for quality prospects to refresh the cycle.  That's the MLB talent exchange.  You need to understand your place in this and try to win and assemble a roster accordingly.  

Not being able/willing to re-sign Realmuto, especially after some of their recent aggressive additions, is actually quite understandable.  But here's what is not understandable...failing to anticipate that and trading their #1 overall prospect (their best pitching prospect in years) and a starting level catching prospect for 2 years of Realmuto, which happen to look like 2 years of retooling.  So next year, instead of a rotation looking like Nola/Wheeler/Sixto/Howard, Sixto will be in another city and they'll probably have a catcher inferior to Alfaro.  

If you aren't going to be an apex big market franchise, then don't trade big prospects for players you can't sign.

I am guessing so that Howard can come up and take his spot on Friday. Pretty sure Howard had to be off the roster for 6 games in order to push his free agency a year. Friday is game 7, and would be VV’s turn.

Got it.  I remember reading something about that rule.  My dad was texting me all day flipping out that VV was on the mound.  I guarantee a remote was flung across the room.

Which is the whole point of what I was getting at a couple days ago. Like if you’re going to trade Sixto your best prospect and Alfaro who might be a solid catcher given some time for Realmuto and then you’re just gonna let him walk in two years what was the point of that trade? Like you only make that trade knowing you are going to have to pay Realmuto not just pay him but probably overpay him because he is the best at his position. This reminds me of Bill O’Brien making a trade with the dolphins for Laremy Tunsil. At the time of the deal O’Brien didn’t get a contract extension so tunsil had a ton of leverage against them and raked them over the coals on that contract. This is playing out exactly the same way you gave up high end prospects and didn’t just forego arbitration by just offering him like 7 years 165-70 million so he’d take the deal making him the highest paid catcher in baseball and you’d get 5 prime years of Realmuto in the deal. 

The two years, if Realmuto leaves, aren’t gonna be better than the seven years you Could’ve had control of sixto and you still have Alfaro for years where he could blossom into a solid starting catcher. Like you don’t make that move if you’re not willing to pay Realmuto and pay like a big market team. If he is not on the Phillies next year that trade is a bad trade by Klentak especially if sixto winds up being a top end starter. Heck the segura trade doesn’t look all that great. Rather have Crawford and let him develop them segura who’s supposedly a pain in the a** in the clubhouse everywhere he goes.
