November 8, 20223 yr It's tricky to know what to do with Painter. Wheeler and Nola are not THAT young. I think of Painter more as someone to trend up for when they start to trend down...not necessarily someone that is going to ever have much of an additive effect on them. It's especially difficult to project what we'll get out of him in October for a younger pitcher. While these guys do pitch year round at that age, fall ball is a bit more controlled and is a horrible approximation of playoff MLB. I think the lineup sort of is what it is...I want the main improvement to be increased maturity and some more power (even line drive power, not necessarily a HR surge) from Bohm, Stott, and Marsh along with a return to playing major league baseball from Castellanos. Maybe all of that allows you to get Schwarber out of the leadoff spot so he doesn't start setting historical records for solo HRs. I do think Thomson uses Alvarado and Siranthony all wrong. They simply lack the control to come into high leverage mid-inning jams. You want to use them as old school 8th and 9th inning guys? Fine. But they throw too many balls, get behind in too many counts, and are too all over the place to be designed men on base middle of the lineup 6th inning relievers. You either need to trust your starters to get out of those jams, or find relievers that are more reliably throwing strikes. These two guys need to start with clean slates. So my priority would be to add the best, youngest starter to the rotation possible. I'd try to keep their big 3 pitching prospects in the fold as a handcuff against the aging of Wheeler/Nola. The other prospects...I'd probably line some of them up to try for a deadline deal for an impact bullpen arm at the deadline.

November 8, 20223 yr Showalter did turn the Mets around, and he was a clear favorite in the spring. If you eliminate recency bias, then I guess he's in. If you include Snitker, then you need to include Thomson. Both got hot later in the playoffs. Coming back to win the division is pretty impressive. But if finalists were selected after the playoffs, then isn't the playoff run enough for Thomson to be named a finalist? Roberts shouldn't be in there because he has a pretty good roster and they always make the playoffs. He has 1 title to show for all those division wins and 100-win seasons. What was so impressive with this season over last year?
November 8, 20223 yr I personally want no part of Correa - wouldn’t mind Bogaerts but would prefer Turner

The Houston connection? Regardless which one they go after, it'll be interesting to see how many years they get. I would offer 5 years with a high AAV. Just hate contracts that are longer than 5 years just because of the obvious decline in performance that comes with age.

The Houston connection is part of it, but he's also been injury prone in the past, although that hasn't really been an issue the past couple seasons. Lowest average of the three - we need guys who get on base a high % of the time.

November 9, 20223 yr They need to be aggressive. This unexpected run makes them an appealing landing spot for free agents that want to get a ring. Have to take advantage of that to tweak the roster with a couple of high impact moves. Turner and Rodon would be ideal.
November 9, 20223 yr That kid from Japan is about to be posted..... hes a big fan of harper...... he plays lf. Hitting champ twice already in japan. Seems like an easy signing. Then they really should move castellanos for anything they can get.

For the minimal compensation you’ll get, it’s probably better just just keep him and hope he gets back to what he was with the Reds.

I just think it's a lot of money for a guy that really can't play the field. Other than a few games in the playoffs where he got lucky.

If they really want to win and his salary isn’t keeping them from spending even more, then it’s probably worth keeping him around (at the backend of the lineup) to see if he gets back to what he was last year.
