July 2, 20232 yr The Trea Turner signing has been an abject failure. Other than that little week, week and a half hot streak he had, he has been trash.
July 2, 20232 yr This team is gonna get curb stomped playing this way by the rays this week and then likely the marlins cause they tend to not play well in Miami. Great job by the Phillies. Had a chance to gain ground and managed not too by losing 2 of 3 to the nats

In fairness Correa and bogaerts have been equally as disappointing. The best of the 4 that were available is Swanson. Frankly he’s marginally better. It’s looking like that entire SS FA class were all overpaid

I hope they don’t trade any prospects because this team ain’t it
July 2, 20232 yr I can't accept this team as a playoff contender. Nope, not this year. Too many overpaid/under performing players, starting with their high priced addition Trea Turner. If I was John Middleton, I would be pissed.
July 4, 20232 yr Painters elbow flared up again. Just get him the surgery already. They're just wasting time at this point.

July 4, 20232 yr Don’t understand how we keep batting relamuto 5th when he’s hitting horrible for a month and a half and with RISP .180. Meanwhile bohm is hot and hitting .360 With RISP for the year.
July 4, 20232 yr I'm just gonna say it.... I can't stand trea turner. I'd take Segura any day over this bum

I’d take Turner. The problem is bogaerts and Correa are just as bad if not worse than Turner has been. Really the only one of the big 4 SS that were FA having a decent season is Swanson. And really he’s not worth the money either for his numbers. They’ve really all been crap. My hope is that castellanos was as bad as Turner last year and now he’s an all star. So hoping Turner is more comfortable next year

My hope is that castellanos was as bad as Turner last year and now he’s an all star. So hoping Turner is more comfortable next year Castellanos had much more of an established track record than Turner did, so it was easier to project that he'd eventually come around. So even though nearly every Phillies fan spent the entire 2022 season putting Castellanos on their ish list, I was actually cautiously optimistic that he'd eventually start to hit. I just don't get that same vibe from Turner. I think he's far too undisciplined at the plate (swings at low and away pitches well outside of the strike zone; and doesn't walk enough) to ever be a consistently good major league hitter.

I think he's far too undisciplined at the plate (swings at low and away pitches well outside of the strike zone; and doesn't walk enough) to ever be a consistently good major league hitter. What? turner has as good of a track record as castellanos did and I’d argue better. Turner was one of the better hitting shortstops in the mlb for a couple years prior to this year. Last 4 years he hit a combined .311 and OBP of .361. He hit .298, .335, .328 and .298. his OBP last 4 years prior to this year were .353, .394, .375 and .343. So prior to 2023 he was hitting a for a good average and had really nice OBP. Prior to 2023, castellanos highest OBP over the last 4 years was .362. His next highest was .337 which is still below turner’s worst over that four year window. castellanos in 2 of the last 3 years prior to 2023 had a .298 and a .305 OBP. His 2020 and 2022 seasons were really unimpressive avg and OBP Castellanos the last 4 years prior to this year, his batting avg was combined .280 and a .331 OBP. Prior to joining the Phillies his previous 4 seasons he hit .290 and .342 OBP (.021 less on BA and .019 in OBP). Both are less than what Turner averaged the 4 years prior to coming here. In the last 5 years his batting avg was .298, .289, .225, .309 and .263. So over the past 4 years turner has always been hitting near or over .300 until this year. Castellanos was usually solid but but he also had two down years in of .225 and .263 in two of the last 3 seasons Also Turner before this year also struckout way less than castellanos did over the last 4 years. Before this year, Turner had struck out 390 times over the past 4 seasons. Castellanos was at 463 (the 4 years prior to joining the Phillies he was at 484 strikeouts so nearly 100 more in 13 less plate appearances). For their careers, Turner has 4106 plate appearances and just 759 strikeouts and castellanos has 5377 and 1245 strikeouts. So turner is striking out on 18% of his plate appearances and castellanos is at 23%. based on his career so far, if Turner had the 5377 PA that castellanos has then he’d have 993 strikeouts which would be 252 less than castellanos id add before coming here turner was considered a good defensive shortstops. Castellanos was always considered a mediocre fielder For turner’s 9 year career he averages (even with this bad year) .297, OBP OF .350, SLG of .478 and OPS of .828 (before this year it was .302, OBP of .355, SLG of .487 and OPS of .842). Castellanos for his 11 year career averages .279, .328 OBP, SLG of .477 and OPS of .806. Heck their 162 game averages are pretty damn close except Turner has been a better batting average hitter and OBP and castellanos averages about 7 more RBIs a year. turner has been top 2 in the lineup most of the last 3-4 years and castellanos in the heart of the line so has had more chances to drive home runs and Turner is a shortstop turner’s 162 avg: 23 HRs, 81 RBIs, .297 avg, .350 OBP, .478 SLG and .828 OPS castellanos 162 avg: 24 HRs, 88 RBIs, .279 avg, .328 OBP, .477 SLG and .808 OPS castellanos number’s last year arent all that much different than Turner’s doing right now. Castellanos in 2022: .263 avg, .305 OBP, .389 SLG and OPS of .694 with 13 HRs and 62 RBIs turner is on pace for 16 HRs and 57 RBIs with .246 Avg, .303 OBP, .387 SLG and .687 if you want to say Turner isn’t going to turn around cause he’s on the downside of his career that’s a different argument. Or that mentally you just don’t see him getting out of this then I could say maybe. However, if you’re gonna tell me you don’t think he can be a consistent major league hitter and doesn’t have a high enough OBP/walks but you thought castellanos would turn it around cause he had a better track record is a bad argument. their career numbers would actually favor Turner turning it around over castellanos doing so as Turner for his career and in their primes has the better batting avg & OBP and less strikeouts per plate appearances than castellanos.
July 5, 20232 yr If the Phillies want to win this series they really need to pull out the game tonight. It’s Walker vs littell. It’s a BP game for the rays. littell has a 5.28 ERA so need to hit him early. The Thursday game is Sanchez vs. McClanahan. mcClanahan might be the best pitcher in the AL

I looked at yahoo last night and for some reason they still had him as the starter for Thursday(as of writing this they still do which makes no sense since he went on IL Saturday). Not that I cheer for injury but it’s definitely nice to avoid seeing him this series.
July 5, 20232 yr Would love to not trade and keep this kid at the deadline. That said unless harper moves to first permanently or castellanos is moved to 1b not sure i see him starting next year cause I’d assume harper moved back to RF and castellanos moves over to LF. I could see the Phillies using him in a platoon with marsh as marsh struggles vs LHP
