Has anyone ever asked Thomson or DD why Covey is on the roster? It seems like every year there is one guy that is a bottom of the barrel type of guy that they continue to play for no reason.

Used to call him gas can clay or white flag clay when he’d come on. The issue is Thomson uses covey in a situation like today or high leverage situations where he has no business being in. Like when it becomes 8-0 yesterday or Phillies up 13-2 that’s when you use him. Unfortunately Thomson doesn’t understand that.
August 13, 20232 yr Shouldn't be shocked about the offensive impotence. I think we all knew deep down that when they scored 13 runs on Friday that they weren't gonna do crap the next 2 games. It's like clockwork with this team.

It's like clockwork with this team. in their last 12 games the two best pitchers they faced were lopez and gray. Not a coincidence they scored 1 run in those two games. They feast on bad pitching or team’s 4-5th starters on quality teams. They are erratic against good pitching and quality teams. They’ve played 77 games against teams currently over .500 this year. They are 33-34 and averaging 3.7 runs per game. Some of that is skewed cause they had games of 15, 14 12 and 13 runs where 3 of those games they faced the 4 or 5th starter on the staff of those teams (arguably the worst pitcher on the staff). They have scored 4 or less in 45 of those games. of those 45 it’s been 3 or less in 34 of those games.

They can’t score runs against good pitching

They can’t score runs against good pitching Tbh i think they have a punchers chance vs. the dodgers cause the dodgers starting pitching this year has really not been very good. Kershaw is the only starter with a 3.75 ERA or less. But almost always struggled in the postseason. Plus down buehler and May. Urias having a nola like year. The dodgers bullpen is similar to the Phillies. Have a good closer and set up guy in Phillips and graterol. With some guys that are inconsistent but have quality stuff. The issue is the dodgers offense has been really good so you likely gonna have to outslug them. They are third in the league in runs. not sure the Phillies offense is consistent enough to hit. Phillies are 12th and trail the dodgers by 110 runs. Unless the Braves pitching implodes i don’t see anyone in the NL beating them. They hit at another level and pitching is still 7th in ERA in the league even though they haven’t been as good in the second half. tbh the national league outside of the Braves, dodgers, brewers and Phillies isn’t very good. Cubs have the potential to get hot and create havoc but their end of the season is tough. Got 23 or 32 games vs. teams over .500 at the end. But 5th in runs and 15th in ERA. but ERA would be less but had some guys get hurt. Frankly giants, reds, dbacks and Miami are not very good. Out of them i think the giants scare you the most cause their pitching is good.

Eh i disagree they don’t have a bond. This team is really close and they genuinely like each other and you can see it with how they interact with one another. I don’t think that’s the issue. And as the 07 turned to 08 turned to 09 turned to 2010 and finally 2011 the Phillies became less guys grew up together in the minors and collecting tons of talent. At one point they had guys like Ibanez, pence, halladay, Lee, oswalt, lidge (even victorino and werth didn’t start with the Phillies organization) who were major factors in the Phillies becoming a juggernaut in 2011 before everything unraveling. Also we forget but 2007 and 2008 the Phillies were actually similar to this and last years’ teams. They had some of the same struggles this team had with consistency but eventually caught the Mets to win the division the last day in 2007 and last week of 2008. Heck we had the rollins issue of saying interleague games didn’t matter and it was why they consistently got destroyed by AL in late May to early July when they had a bunch of them. I just tend to think they had 3 guys on that roster that were elite players. 2 won mvps in Howard and rollins and utley is the best second baseman in Phillies history. The only one comparable to any of those three is harper. Everyone else isn’t at that level. They are closer to werth and victorino level. I’d argue that trio of Howard, rollins and utley might be the best the Phillies have had on 50 years and if it’s not it’s second to Schmidt, rose and whoever else you want to include to me I look at this team having three major flaws. First their lineup construction has issues especially without Rhys. While win percentage with schwarber at leadoff is nice, there were games where they weren’t winning due to the offense but pitching basically carrying an offense that was highly inconsistent. It’s hard yo win in the postseason with leadoff guy hitting .182. Even last year schwarber was over .200 in 220 range. Minimum 100 games a season he’s played he’s on pace for worse avg, 3rd worst OBP, 2nd worse slugging and worse OPS. Add on turner has been lousy until this last homestand. Harper doesn’t have his usual power. I think the biggest issue though is that you can get by with Rojas. The league is eventually going to catch up to him and you’re going to see a little bit of a regression until he can adjust. The problem is you can’t have that and have somebody like cave/wilson/Castro/sosa forced to also play everyday. There’s a giant hole in that lineup. That’s Rhys Hoskins. They didn’t fix that hole at the deadline. And I’m not sure it gets fixed this year even if Marsh returns. He has a drop off against LHP. i think their starting pitching is fine for the regular season. But postseason i see them running into issues vs. better teams deeper in the playoffs . You have wheeler who could be your ace but everyone else is more of a three to a five starter. When you get to the playoffs, you need 1a and 1b to win. Look at the Astros, look at the Rangers, look at the Braves. Those are likely the teams you’re gonna wind up facing in the World Series or nlcs. They have 1a and 1b. The Phillies don’t have that so they’re at a major disadvantage similar to the World Series last year. the bullpen has been fine. Soto hasn’t been what they thought and dominguez and Alvarado have been hurt. If they get healthy and soto figures it out like dominguez last year in the postseason then they’ll be fine. However cause of all the close games and injuries the Phillies are taxing a guy like kimbrel. He might be done by then. last issue is Thomson making some really poor decisions with lineup, days off and pitching decisions. He’s not been nearly good enough and he’s actually cost them at least 3-4 games. If he manages this way in the postseason and results are similar they are doomed

Ah, revisionist history at its finest. The ‘08 Phils weren’t some juggernaut. In fact, they were exactly one game WORSE than this years team after 119 games. I loved that team, but let’s not act like they dominated all year on their way to a WS. As far as the "bond” that’s a bunch of crap. This team is clearly very close. You’ve got a few guys that came in as free agents, but so what? You’ve got some home grown talent with Bohm, Stott, and even Rojas is looking like he could turn out to be a real good player.

Those starters and relievers pitched the playoff performances of their lives! The batters had timely hitting as well. It was fun watching them click on all cylinders at the same time. Would be enjoying to watch this group do the same thing.

That team may not have signed big name free agents like the Phils, but there were plenty of key players on that team that did not come up through the Phils system. Werth, Lidge, Feliz, Blanton, Moyer, etc.

August 15, 20232 yr A major difference between the 2008 and today is the loss of the August waiver trade deadline. We don't make that trade for Matt Stairs if there is no August deadline.
