August 30, 20232 yr That's 2 games where Bryce has come up clutch (game 3 against SF the other) and 2 games where the bullpen has blown it. I would've rather they just lost the game 5-3 or 6-5.

Yep, I was thinking that when it happened but silly me had faith that Kimbrel would be able to overcome it. Nope.

Yeah kimbrel can’t implode like that but he’s been shaky lately. That’s the type of snowball thing that becomes an avalanche. Asking kimbrel to get 4 outs right now is asking for a lot
August 30, 20232 yr Well nick nurse threw out the first pitch and did his kimbrel impression. So clearly the sixers stank rubbed off on kimbrel

Your overreactions are something. I think the concern i have right now is the pitching has been so-so outside of wheeler and nola the past couple games but the hitting has been ridiculous to make up for some of those warts. Just looking at it: wheeler besides pitching against the nationals has been good. like really good so no worry there. nola may or may not have turned the corner. Has a 3.68 ERA in august which is solid to good. His last 4 starts it’s 2.63. The game against the Brewers is going to tell us a lot about where he exactly is. Because that is a playoff team on the road with a playoff caliber roster. walker has been what we expected out of a 3-4 starter. However concerning he has 21 walks in just 8 second half starts and the first half of the season he had 18 starts and 38 BB. Meaning second half he’s walking more. His WHIP is also higher. First half 1.25 and second half 1.44. I think the biggest concern is that his velocity is not where it needs to be. I wouldn’t be shocked when Ranger Suárez comes back Sunday if he pitches well and feels fine the next two days after if they skipped a start or two with walker. lorenzen has been what i think we expected him to be the last two starts. I do t think his first two starts is who he is. I wish it were that but he’s not. He’s really a 4th starter. The issue is he’s already 20+ innings over his career high. Chance he might run out of steam down the stretch. suarez is coming off an injury. So gonna need to see what he looks like. Frankly he was great in June. since then he has a 4.66 era. Since the all star break his era is just 4.08 but his opponents BA is .307 (.259 in 1st half) and whip is 1.59 (1.33 WHIP first half). So he’s been pretty fortunate his ERA isn’t higher as he’s managed to limit the damage. sanchez has a similar issue going on like lorenzen. I think he eventually evens back out to what he is which is a 4-5 start. He’s also at his career high in innings through the majors or the minors. So there’s a chance you see a drop off from him over the next month. the bullpen has a lot of issues going on. Kimbrel has been bad this month even when he manages to close it out. Has a a 5.73 ERA and 1.36 WHIP. In 9 of 11 appearances this month he’s has either walked or allowed a guy on base. The second half his era is a half run higher, opponents are hitting 27 points higher, nearly .300 OBP and his strikeouts per nine is down from 13.9 to 8.6. I think the Alvarado injury and the Dominguez injury and soto not being very good has really forced him to pitch more innings than the Phillies would’ve liked. Add on they’ve been in a lot of close games up until the last part of August. They could really use him to get more rest down the stretch so you hope you get what he was in the first half of the year alavarado’s stuff looks good but he’s using a lot of pitches per appearance. He’s averaging 18.5 per appearance and he’s only pitched 1 inning in each and has yet to throw back to back days. So hope he’s elbow holds up. soto and dominguez have both been really underwhelming this year. Dominguez era looks better than what he’s actually pitched like. Times where they look electric and like they figured it out. But then revert back to being inconsistent. Dominguez had the same issue towards the end of last year when he returned from injury and figured it out during the playoffs. Gotta hope both figure it out. hoffman is a solid bullpen guy. Not using him in a ton of high leverage situation. But he’s done well for what he is. Covey is what he is. Strahm has been good. He’s not perfect but he’s also pitched the second most innings of his career and on pace for the most he has in 4 years. Hopefully he’s not toast by the playoffs. in the playoffs if they are going to win, they need nola to pitch like the last two games and Suarez to be what he was last postseason. The bullpen needs to figure stuff out. They were frankly not very good in this last series. It’s why at the deadline I thought if you weren’t going to get a right handed power bat or bellinger (was unlikely with the market) that you should’ve pressed harder to get hicks from the Cardinals. At that time you didn’t know if Alvarado‘s elbow would hold up and Soto/Dominguez haven’t looked great with consistency all year. And kimbrel’s innings were beginning to accumulate. If they had him, I think their bullpen is much more dangerous and you could afford to not have Soto or Dominguez step up but if one of them did then your bullpen would be lights out.
August 31, 20232 yr Yup, the pitching will cost this team. And if the offense cools down, they could be in for a bad stretch
