The guy hasn't pitched more than 57 innings since 2019 and he is already at 40.1 innings. We all saw what happened to Michael Lorenzen last year down the stretch - the wheels fell off, and he had a history of more innings pitched and less of an injury history than Turnbull. I think he's more important to this team as a long man and that had more to do with moving him to the pen than Walker's contract. If there's a move to be made, they'll make it - they have proven that. I wouldn't be surprised if we flipped Walker in a secondary deal at the deadline for a low level prospect after we acquire someone for the rotation. Was thinking of this the other day, the other point is that Turnbull has zero chance of starting a game in the playoffs. He will come out of the bullpen, so you might as well get him adjusted to it all season so he can be confident in the playoffs as a good bullpen arm.

No offense walker has absolutely zero chance of starting a game in the playoffs and will come out of the pen. So this exact argument could be made for Walker. Add on so far turnbull has a 6.75 ERA and opponents are hitting .353 against him as a RP. So that experiment isn’t working and Walker as a 5th isn’t working either.

Turnbull isn’t going to be used out of the pen if his era as a reliever is 6.75 and guys are hitting .353 against him. Frankly they shouldn’t use Soto and Dominguez for that reason but they will cause they trust them out of the pen (even though they shouldn’t) and due to their past experience out of the pen. I’d also guess Orion’s downfall in the nlcs last year will be in their thinking about a guy with little MLB RP experience and just using them in that type of atmosphere. I think there was probably a lesson learned from that Let me just point this out he’s been in the league since 2018, the last time he was a reliever was in 2018 and it was for 1 game. So you’re asking a guy who hasn’t done it since his rookie season, 7 seasons ago to just adjust midseason doing it and expecting he’s just going to figure it out or be good in a role he’s likely not best suited for or trained for his entire career and offseason so you would be WRONG too if he’s going suck out of the bullpen like he has, has no experience doing so in his career and the adjustment is as simple as just a couple of times a month transitioning and they’ll just trust using him out of the pen in a playoff game unless it’s a blowout. Also point out if the Phillies make a trade for a RP at the deadline your bullpen for the postseason is very likely going to be Dominguez (unfortunately), Soto (unfortunately), Alvarado, strahm, kerkering, Hoffman, marte (if healthy was good this year), RP traded for and Sanchez (depending on how the series plays out). Add Nola, Ranger and wheeler that’s 12 pitchers. So can have 13 pitchers. It’s gonna come down to Ruiz, Walker or Turnbull. right now Ruiz has looked the best out of all 3 of those guys out of the pen (and in walker’s case in general). There’s a chance Walker and Turnbull don’t get used and might not even be on the playoff roster if things continue to go this way for Walker and Turnbull out of the pen
May 29, 20241 yr Tired of the Harper disappearing acts, then does not run out the play to first, and who the f is Burrell, that scrub, he should just be happy he has a job and sit his fat arse on the bench

May 29, 20241 yr At this point i think it’s safe to say turning turnbull into a RP isn’t going well. His last 4 appearances he’s given up 7 ERs, 13 hits in 5 innings.

Ride him out as the starter until the wheels fall off. frankly if Walker didn’t get hurt beginning of the year, he might have been sent to the minors and there until someone got hurt in the rotation. So basically you were playing with house money. Ride it out. He isnt going to be a starter in the playoffs anyway. Thats wheeler, nola, ranger and Sanchez. If you trade for a BP piece it means it comes down to him, walker and Ruiz for the last spot. Ruiz has actually looked really good so a chance neither walker or turnbull are on the playoff roster Also he’s never been a reliever and that transition during the season isn’t for everyone. Ranger went reliever to starter and Myers from starter to reliever. But it’s harder than you think to do in a couple months when he’s likely trained as a starter all offseason and his entire career.
