I’d be willing to bet the dbacks catch the Braves for that first wildcard spot. The dbacks are playing well and getting healthy. And their schedule isn’t exactly difficult down the stretch either. They are 22nd hardest.

Don’t sleep on the Mets either. They’re right there

It’s hilarious how everyone knows when something big happens in world events or someone famous dies that Castellanos goes yard lol

i feel like the Mets is more of fools gold. The dbacks legitimately have the rotation and lineup to be one of the top teams in the NL when healthy. Kelly and Eduardo Rodriguez are getting close to being back. They also play the Phillies, Braves, Red Sox and brewers 17 times in September. I think that’s what ultimately dooms them

Braves are a mess, no excuse not to win the division now

Albies is out 8 weeks and Fried going to 15 day disabled list due to forearm neuritis. Yikes.

If the Phillies don't win the division they should move to Oakland

Yeah it wouldn’t surprised me if they fall to the second wild card spot. Dbacks are getting Kelly and Rodriguez back soon. Cardinals are only 1.5 games back. padres, Mets, pirates are just 4-6 games back

Since that Rockies series in May they are only 25-21. Since the Mets London series they are 18-16. They have had injuries but really they have been a mediocre team for over a month but with some flashes here and there.

Mediocre or average?  Mediocre means below average to me.

I consider mediocre to be average. I can’t say they are below average cause they managed to not play below .500. But really since the London series they are 19-17. Injuries contributed but they also have had some games and series like Saturday where even if they were healthy they just looked bad.

Fair enough.  In your assessment system, what is the step above/better than mediocre?

A 19-17 record is a 0.528 winning percentage. Outside of the Phillies, 9 out of 29 teams have a winning percentage greater than or equal to that value for the entire season. With the actual for the whole season Phillies taken out of the mix, this winning percentage would be enough to be the first wildcard. So, while we're not happy with their performance, it is still above average- just not what we got used to earlier in the season.

Hopefully now that all of the major pieces are returning or have returned from the DL they'll make a couple of decent moves before the deadline- at least one OF who can hit left handed pitching, maybe even an every day OF, and a back end of the bullpen piece and get the roster squared away for the playoffs.

I'm going to point out that two months ago, when the Phillies were red hot, I heard idiots at bars and in casual conversations say that the Phillies were winning TOO MUCH, and that they wished they would've lost a couple more games to worse teams.  Why, I don't know; to build character or know how to overcome losing or something?  Now they are losing to worse teams a little more often.  Are these people happy?

I said all along to these people to enjoy those two hot months, because it builds a lead that makes it harder for other teams to overcome if the Phillies slump.  And the Phillies would come back down to earth at some point anyway, which is the case now.  But they have a comfortable lead in the division and even a fairly comfortable lead on the National League, so they can afford unfortunate series losses like they had this weekend.

Above average. After that I’d say good. Then after good great. They were playing great for the first month and half. Hard to consistently maintain that all year.

I do think they had a shot to be above average even with the injuries during the stretch where they left to play the Rockies (may 24). they had series with Rockies, A’s, marlins, tigers and giants during that stretch of games. However they managed to go 7-9 in those games. against the better teams over that stretch they managed to go 19-13. The issue is like yesterdays game they had multiple games where they just looked like they were going through the motion or not same intensity they had vs. the dodgers (first As game, first marlins game).

And the reason that bothers me is because I thought in the NLCS after game two they lost their focus in game 3. i feel that way cause Stubbs was discussing partying in the pool when they won the series and it looked like they thought the dbacks would roll over and die (i actually thought game 4 against the Astros they had lost some focus— Astros had great pitching to get a no hitter but they lost focus on their approaches at the plate they had previous games) To me it was pretty important to see how they responded to the Dodgers series the next series. Because you’re gonna get into a playoff where you have a big emotional win or win a big series like games 2 and 5.

Abominable (worse than E or F)

Failure (E or F)

Unacceptable (D-)

Poor (D and D+)

Fair/Mediocre/Below Average  (C-)

Average (C)

Above Average (C+ and B-)

Good (B)

Great (A-and A)

Legendary (A+)

A lot will depend on the evaluator’s age.  When I was in school, a score of 75 was average.  Average is well over 80 now.

1-2 so far in this tough 22 game stretch after the much needed W yesterday

btw - A team having a year like the Phillies is always going to have an extended stretch where they settle down and play around .500 ball.  The exceptions are those very rare few that go on to get say 106+ wins.  They are still on a pace to win 103 games and are still 3 games better than any other MLB team.  Let's see where they are after this 22 game stretch and then start the drive toward October.  For now, they are fine.

Stubbs with a 45 is damn impressive

At this point, a lock down reliever may be a bigger priority than outfielder.
