July 23, 20241 yr Turner not getting the tag on Santana is inexcusable. He had a ton of time move over to better block the base and make the tag and got lazy thinking Santana would just slide into the tag

But have your glove extebded and not in front of the base waiting on the slide. If he has it extended as he starts his slide, you’re gonna hit him on his helmet and not wait for his hand. With the bases being bigger now there’s more of a chance you can do kind of a swim move like Santana did to beat a glove. That’s just down in front of the base

The issue was more with the new bases being bigger you can’t just leave your glove down in front of the base and get the out on the hands. Guys are doing more what Santana did and have a shot at being safe. You have to go and make the tag. Turner wasn’t gonna be called for blocking if he had his glove more out then on the ground in front of the base (technically can make the argument that’s blocking if they were gonna call it). If Turner extends his glove out, it hits Santana‘s helmet as he’s sliding right into his glove.

I still can't stand Turner.... It's an irrational hate lol

Because the odds are guys aren’t gonna be able to pull that off on a smaller bag without being tagged first. But with the bigger bag, it’s somewhat possible to happen. It’s why now you see a lot of players lean into the runner when given adequate time to make the tag so they can’t attempt it

Even so the bigger issue with the Phillies right now is their bullpen since that Marlins’ series has been bad. And they can’t hit consistently. Can’t blame the injuries anymore because everybody’s back. To me you can see since that Rockies series in late May that they haven’t had the same type of crispness and consistency. I don’t expect them to play at a 700+ percentage for the entire year. But since that series they’ve been super inconsistent. Injuries play some of that but they have had issues on offense lately with a majority of the guys are healthy. Like Marchan and Stubbs were hitting as well as realmuto. One game they look like they can’t hit a ball off a t ball stand or the bullpen can’t get outs. Another game they look good. The only thing that matters is when they get October they better be playing like the best team. Because your record doesn’t mean crap because you could very easily run into a team like the Phillies do to the Braves and lose because you’re not playing your best.

Stott, avalardo and ranger are the most concerning to me right now and then of course the outfield. If one of or not all of them don't get their sheet together I don't think we are going very far. I tend to not get to upset over a bad stretch but, those guys just don't seem like they are gonna pull out of it.

Said the other day it’s not just injuries why they are 26-23 since Rockies series. 19-18 since London. And 8-8 in July. It’s not all injuries as to why they aren’t playing better than just an average baseball team. These 22 games are their toughest stretch of games this year. They are currently 1-3. I thought 11-11 was realistic. With how they look currently they might not even get to 10-12 and they are looking like a 7-15 or 8-14 type stretch.

July 23, 20241 yr Marsh, Stott, Alvarado have been bad in July. Even schwarber has been lackluster since he’s come back from his injury. marsh is 0 for his last 14. Since July 1st his slashes are .200/.282/.739. Really he was great vs. Dodgers (.500/.546/1.946) but rest of the month: .077 avg/.172 OBP/.077 SLG/.249 OPS Stott has had a season long issue. In July his slashed are .200/.255/.280/.535 that’s brutally bad. He needs to figure it out however have a feeling this is a situation where it might not be fixable til the offseason. Why is it every year we have 1 guy that turns into markelle fultz at the plate? schwarber since returning from his injury has slashed of .167/.311/.372/.672. Alvarado has been really bad. He’s pitched 6.1 IP in July. He’s given up 7 er, 10 hits, 5 Bb and 1 K. Going through a rough patch but really this has become extended for nearly a month. suarez is also concerning. Cause even with Jt back last night he had the same issues that have hurt him over the last month plus. I think he’s tired. He’s near his career high in innings pitched and it’s end of July. id add Dominguez looks like he’s reverting back to what he was early in the season. In his last 10 appearances his era is 5.73. He’s gone 11 innings giving up 7Ers, 10 hits, 4 BB, 3 HRs and 14Ks. Strike out rate is still good but he’s wild when he comes in and falling behind hitters
July 23, 20241 yr I’d be kind of irritated if the Phillies get someone like Canha or Ward and the Braves got arozerena
July 23, 20241 yr I get the need to continuously address problems and potential problems but we are still 2.5 games better than any other team in the league and on pace to win over 100 games. The sky is not falling. Let's get thru this 22 game stretch and see where we are. If we go 5-17 then sure time to get worried. My single specific concern is with Ranger. I'd rather go ahead and sit him down for two or weeks now rather than keep putting him out there. Stott will find his way thru this and in the meantime we have Sosa to help. The others struggling are in normal slumps that almost every player goes thru each year.

The others struggling are in normal slumps that almost every player goes thru each year. Not so sure Stott is coming out of it. Hes been this all year outside of 3 weeks in May. There’s a chance he’s just this type of guy this year and needs an offseason to fix it out. Like this is more than just a slump. This has been what he’s been for 75% of the season. As for Dominguez, this has been kind of what he’s been last year and this year. Highly inconsistent. Stretches where he looks like 2022 and stretches where he’s just bad. It’s been about 1.5 seasons of it. He kind is this. my issue with Mars is the same issue I’ve had since they made that trade. That was the entire goal of that trade is they thought they could fix a guy who had a bunch of talent and was a highly rated prospect a year prior. He was bad against LHp then and he still is. And is a solid LF but they also believed he’d be a CF due to his prospect status and that’s where they were hoping he’d be. Today the fact is they still need an every day outfielder and not just a platoon player for Rojas is because Brandon marsh in year five and 2.5 years with the Phillies hasn’t been able to figure out left-handed pitching and is much better in LF defensively (even without Rojas). That’s the reality. He might be an awesome clubhouse guy and a good personality. but let’s just be honest the Phillies when they made that trade thought they would fix him against left-handed pitching and he’d be in every day player. They need an everyday OF or two more platoon OFs as Kevin long and the Phillies could only make him into a platoon player. for being 2 1/2 games ahead that doesn’t mean crap at the end of the day. The postseason isn’t played in May. The Phillies were great and the best team in baseball in April and May. We are at the end of July now. So that’s two months ago Just cause you have the best record doesn’t mean you’re playing the best or the best team now. 2 months is a long time ago. The fact is since London they’ve had some injuries but been 1 game over 500 during that stretch. And if you think about it, they were 5-4 without Bryce Harper and Kyle Schwarber. So that means when they were healthy, they’re exactly 500. they haven’t had a murderous type of schedule until right about now. Let me just point out since they went on that Rockies road trip May 24. They’re on an 85 win pace. It’s not a small sample size. It’s 49 games which is over a quarter of the season. Which is not horrible but injuries or not they clearly haven’t played consistently for over a month now.

Sure, but the majority of 100 win teams go thru a stretch like the one we have just gone thru. Sometimes that is early and sometimes in the middle. The worst time to have this period is at the end of the year. The season is long. A six week stretch of mediocre ball with all the injuries is perfectly ok. The key will be to come out of this 22 game stretch and then build again over the last 6 to 7 weeks heading into the playoffs.

The key will be to come out of this 22 game stretch and then build again over the last 6 to 7 weeks heading into the playoffs. That may happen and probably does. However, you’re at 49 games where you’ve been pretty mediocre. Thats over a quarter of your season and 2 months (may 24 is 8 weeks and that Rockies series is really when you saw it start). Like you’re about to pass the 51 games where you were incredible (37-14). Baseball is a long season so what you did in April and May doesn’t mean that’s who you are going to be in August and September. Phillies the last two years have shown that. we can keep saying injuries, but some of this isn’t injury related. You making 4 errors in a game it is not injury related. They managed to win because the Marlins are bad but they should’ve lost that game with how poorly they played. The bullpen has been largely healthy and Hoffman, strahm and kerkering might be the only guys we trust fully in a high leverage situation. We can keep saying injuries are the main reason they did it. they got the 6th best production out of their catchers during JT’s time on the IL. just talking offensively, Edmundo Sosa played phenomenal with Turner out. Their issues have really started to surface since they went to London with the inconsistency of their offense (catchers were actually a bright spot). You can go back all the way to the Rockies series because they really weren’t consistent offensive in the series from the Rockies to the Giants to the Cardinals to the Brewers to when they went over to London and since they came back. Their injuries did not help, but injuries aren’t the only reason for their struggles to me this stretch is going to tell you a lot about the Phillies. This was always the toughest stretch. April and may some teams are still figure out their team and stuff. Ask the last two years of the Phillies or the 2021 Braves or the opposite in 2022 Mets. We will find out by the end of this 22 game stretch exactly how good, bad or mediocre they are vs. better competition. I point this out the Mets in 2022. They were good in April, May and June into July. And then they tailed off at the end of the Braves caught him. And when they got to the playoffs, you could see they were just not the same team anymore and they lost to the Padres. Just because you were great in April and May does not mean you’re gonna recapture that same level down the road. And just because you were bad/average in April and May like the Phillies (2021 Braves) were the last two years does not mean you’re destined to be that team for the last four months of the year. not saying they aren’t gonna turn it around and be perfectly fine. But what I’m saying is it’s starting to be more alarming that you’re close to 50 games which is over a quarter of the season that you’ve been this. And it’s not all of the injuries as the reason.
