The fact of the matter is the extra WC spot makes for less sellers and more buyers. So going to need to overpay to really get a difference maker (although feels like Seattle didn’t have too). This is why they should’ve been making more moves during the off-season because all it is going to cost you was money. Not overpaying in terms of prospects.

The stats have shown he basically has the same issues after 2 years of working with long/phillies that he had with the angels where he can’t hit LHP and is a platoon player. Like to think this post inspired him today. feels like Stott is beginning to get going.
July 27, 20241 yr Phillies did the most important thing that they needed to do at the deadline... which was tighten up the Bullpen. Estevez is likely penciled in as the closer now, and Alvarado and Hoffman become the high leverage guys. Strahm and Kerkering move to the 2nd tier leverage spot. That gives the Phils the clear cut closer... and a RHP/LHP option for the highest leverage and the middle leverage. And they can use a starter as long relief in the playoffs if they choose. They don't really need more than that. Soto, Ruiz, Marte... a bunch of 'meh'. At least one of them won't be on the playoff roster.

He's not developed against lefties yet, but he's hitting well against RHP for the most part. Just a dip for him since coming back. He's the counterpoint to Hays, which is why I think that was a good move. I'd still love to see a CF upgrade, but it seems that's not going to happen. Maybe they can find a pinch hitter that they could snatch up and take Wilson's spot on the roster.

Or if they play matchups with innings with him. Analytically the Phillies like to use guys in specific innings based off matchup. Like if it’s the heart of the lineup in the 8th they’d use Hoffman there and they did that with Alvarado in the past. frankly just leave him as the closer.
July 27, 20241 yr It would have been a much more fun game to be in attendance for if they played like this last night. Also, it would have been more enjoyable if they weren't wearing those stupid blue uniforms.

I’ve said this since they made the trade with the angels. I hated the value we gave up in O’hoppe. I’d trade O’hoppe but i didn’t want to use his value on a former top prospect that was regressing at the mlb level and you had to fix to be an everyday player. Imo could’ve used the value of a top 75 catching prospect that can hit to get a more proven commodity then having to hope you could fix him into an everyday CF.

They did that before because they didn't really have a 'closer'. Now they do, AND they can use Hoffman and/or Alvarado as needed with the lefty/righty matchups. The bullpen got a massive upgrade, IMO. Estevez pushes everyone down one spot in the order and locks it in. Like I said, they have 2 righties and 2 lefties to count on BEFORE the 9th. Then they can turn it over to Estevez.

Desperation move to get a CF that they just didn't have at all. Similar in how they have pushed Rojas to the MLB level before he was really ready for it. That's why I put forward the package I did for Robert Jr. It's expensive but this team is built to win now and the next 3 years. Schwarbomb!
July 27, 20241 yr Keep an eye on Phillips this next inning. He hasn't thrown in a while. That was a LONG inning.

The issue is they had to overpay at the deadline because of the new extra wildcard. The extra wildcard keeps more teams in it so there’s less sellers more buyers and increase asking price. It’s why I was upset during the off-season when they didn’t really do all that much to add to the team. You’re better off throwing money at the problem in the offseason and hoping it solves it then getting to the deadline and having to overpay in prospects to fix a problem as it’s harder to do. That’s realistically what the extra WC has done to the deadline. dont get me wrong it was always kind of a sellers market, but you could probably get some teams that are out of it to give you a guy at a decent price. Now you’re always gonna overpay.

Don’t just sit and wait to the deadline if you think there’s an issue. Like their outfield was questionable at the end of last year and knew they needed another bat since they didn’t have and then lost hoskins. That said I’d be really surprised if they aren’t in on Juan Soto. Don’t know or think they get him but I’d be surprised just based off all the smoke last summer

Let strahm, Hoffman, Alvarado and kerkering figure out the 6-8 (potentially 6th i should say). Not sure Phillies will. I can see them saying if the 3-4-5 is up in the 8th that’s who we want him facing.
