You know the thing that pisses me off with the Bryce Harper thing, the people this offseason who kept saying well he can’t play outfield if you bring rhys back because he’s going to deteriorate. If we’re worried about Bryce Harper, breaking down deteriorating playing the outfield for one year we have massively bigger issues. They shouldn’t even be talking about extending his contract if that’s the case. it tells me they’re worried his body is breaking down already if they need to protect him that much. We aren’t going to look back on his career and be like yup that 2024 season playing the outfield is the entire reason that Bryce Harper completely deteriorated. add on, they went into the 2023 season knowing that Hoskins and Schwarber were gonna play 1B and LF. So if Hoskins didn’t get hurt, at some point in time Harper was going to come back from tj and not be a DH. So you were either gonna have Harper play 1b making Hoskins DH with a crappy schwarber in LF. or you were gonna have to play Harper in OF so that Schwarber could be the DH and hoskins at 1b. So at some point in time either Schwarber was playing Lf everyday and in the playoffs or Hoskins was playing the field and you had a defensive liability. So they were fully prepared to have some sort of defensive liability because the 3 bats of schwarber, Harper and Hoskins meant more than fielding deficiency. And they still have never actually replaced the 30HRs and 80 RBI Rhys averaged his last 3 years (when playing 162 game schedule). Turner was an add on to the lineup you had to make them deeper and scarier. Not replace Rhys’ production.

I think they always knew the last 2-3 years of that Bryce Harper contract was going to be a declining player and likely at that point the rebuild. The thing that makes me laugh though is that people are like oh we got save him for down the road. What are you saving him for? by the time we get to the end of that contract our window is going to be closed. You’re probably in a rebuild or coming out of the rebuild and he’s likely declined to the point he’s not the major piece carrying us. So you might as well go all out now in the next 2-3 years and build the best roster you can to try to win now. That’s why I said you could’ve just put Rhys at 1b and moved Harper to the outfield. That’s the better lineup in 2024 than what you currently got. I’m not saying Hoskins is a savior. That’s not what I’m saying. But the lineup with him is better and frankly gives you a better shot to win. Heck if they had him healthy for game 3 or 4 they might beat the dbacks

Goodbye Their august is actually a tougher schedule then their July 3 at mariners 3 at dodgers 4 at dbacks 2 vs. marlins 4 vs. nats 3 at Braves 3 at KC 3 vs. Houston 3 vs. Braves 22 out of 28 games against teams over .500. Going play 19 games against current playoff teams. 16 games on the road all are against teams over .500.

If they don’t figure their crap out soon it could actually spiral into a complete collapse in August. The Braves schedule comparatively is 4 vs. Miami, 3 vs. brewers, 3 at Rockies, 4 at giants, 3 at angels, 3 vs. Phillies, 3 vs. Nats, 3 at twins and 3 at Phillies. so Braves have 29 games. 12 vs. teams over .500. Of the 16 road games just 6 against teams over .500. Comparing the two schedules would anyone really be shocked if the Braves catch the Phillies?

They had the best record 3 days ago didn’t mean they were the best they had the best team and record after 51 games at 37-14 since they went on that Rockies and giants road trip they are 28-29. That’s 17th best over that time. And it’s more than a third of the season. since London series they are 21-24 which is the 21st best record in baseball. since dodgers series they are 4-11 which is the worst in baseball besides the white Sox. they are trending with each passing week to be getting worse. Ultimately I think they turn it around. But the 2022 Mets who were cruising. Hit the skids, blew a big lead and lost the division to Atlanta and got themselves stabilized but they never really recovered. Why padres beat them. ...or you could actually be the best team and not win the WS. Happens all the time. I'd much rather go through this stretch and then turn things around, win 100 games with the best record, and go on to win the WS than win 109 games and lose in the 1st round.
August 1, 20241 yr They'd need to go 35-19 the rest of the way for 100 wins. I don't care so much about the win number but hoping they still take the division at least.

I agree best team doesn’t always win. And I’d agree i rather win a WS than lose in the first round with 109 wins. However you may also win 98 games and lose in the nlds that’s also a possibility. Could Also be the team that peaked in April and May, wins 90 something games and loses in the nlds this has been more than just this current slump. They have had consistency issues and some of the same issues they’ve had since going to Colorado and sf. It’s been nearly 60 games of being average. You have the 14th best record over the last 60 games. In the last 40 games you have 21st best record. Last 20 games tied for second worst record. So they arent getting better as the season has gone on like he past two years. We can say some of its injuries, which is true but there is a realm of possibility where the Phillies peaked in April and May and they never get back to that level. Let’s not acting like only the first 51 games of the season shows who they really are when there’s a large enough sample size of over 2 months since that Rockies series showing an average baseball team. If we want to go off past history the Phillies also don’t tend to play well in September. So slumping now, tough August schedule along with their recent past in September should be worrisome. Last year 15-13, 2022 were 11-14, 2021 were 13-14 and 2019 were 12-16 (Covid season didn’t use cause it was basically like second month of the season). Also the NL teams are better this year. Padres, dbacks, dodgers (when healthy), pirates and Mets all better this year than last. you know the last time the Phillies won a road series against a team currently at .500 or better? Middle of may. against the mets who aren’t remotely the same team they are now. They’ve won 2 road series since May 15th. Their road record since mid-May has been 11-16. that’s 2.5 months worth of data compared first 1.5 months to start the season (I’d add cardinals, Mets and padres who they beat on the road first month and a half of the season all struggled the first quarter of the season and are vastly better now). even before the major slump they weren’t playing well on the road since mid May. Heading into Pittsburgh and Minnesota they were 9-12 in their last 6 road series. I think they get their crap together and turn it around and make a run in the playoffs. But I’m also not ignoring all the info of last 60 games where they have been an average team and possibility of they peaked too soon
August 1, 20241 yr The only good thing that will come out of this season might be the firing of Robb Thomson.

It would have to be a full on collapse where they just miss the playoffs which i don’t think happens. Girardi got the start of 2022 and he really didn’t deserve it with how they looked during 2020 and how the 2021 season ended.
August 1, 20241 yr If he continues this into start of next year there’s a chance he could be called up later in the season in 2025

There's your starting CF and hopefully front line starter for the next several years. We've all seen this before though on prospects so not gonna hold my breath.

I'm not a big Kingery fan and I thought that contract Klentak gave him was dumb from day 1, but damn, give this guy a chance. Maybe he can be your right-handed bench guy that is actually better than Merrifield or Pache (won't be hard). It would be nice if someone from the esteemed Philly media actually asks DD or Thomson why he never gets a call up. Maybe he comes up and sucks, who knows, but try something different.

I mentioned that last year. Before they traded for Castro. And then even after they traded for Castro. I said kingery has shown more in his major league career than Castro did. You had him sitting in your minor league and you were paying him anyways. So why not give him a chance you’re even if he fails you could’ve figured that out. And then traded for Castro who sucked anyways. The fact of the matter that he hasn’t got a shot again is a little ridiculous to me. They’re giving guys in the minor leagues that have no business at the major legal level a chance to play. At least I could stay at some point in time Scott Kingery was actually a decent major league player. No offense to West Wilson or allarf neither one of those guys should be on a major league roster. They’re AAA players and we’re never want a highly coveted prospect. Kingerry was at least that at one point in time and he had some major league success for a season or two. like why not. We lose Rodolfo Castro or Nick Nelson from the 40 man isn’t going to kill us. And sending Wilson down isn’t going to kill us either.
August 1, 20241 yr This is why you don’t trade for him. Love the talent but at this stage of his career he’s going to be 33 in 6 days, owed a lot of money and can’t stay healthy
