We want to get it done before the recent rights deals go into effect as well

The teams already have projections of what the cap will be several years out.

Next season the cap is expected to be 225 million.

2024 the cap is expected to be 256 million.

The upcoming rights deals are already projected into the future cap, how else would the Chiefs have been able to do a 10 year deal with Mahomes.

2nd Year as the Starter.  2nd Team All Pro.   Congrats Jalen for proving it all on the Field and not letting anyone tell you want you can't do or accomplish.    Don't worry about the MVP which is learning towards Pat after those votes.    There's another MVP out there still to get.  Very Proud of his elevation this year.   Time to continue to take that next step.  One Playoff Win = NFC Title Game Berth.  Two Playoff Wins = Super Bowl Berth. Three Playoff Wins....well you know the rest.   Let's Get It.

I know I might get a lot of hate for this or whatever, but I'm just gonna just put this out there. I think Hurts is BY FAR the best Jalen the Eagles selected in the 2020 draft.

He’ll be the second best Jalen on the team though if the 2023 draft goes well

Wentz got hurt running against the Rams in 2017.

He got hurt running against the Seahawks in 2019.

Dak got hurt running in 2020.

Daniel Jones got hurt this season running.

Jalen got hurt running this season.

That's five times in the last five seasons just in this division. How people are still trying to argue that running isnt dangerous for a QB is beyond me.

Is passing dangerous for a QB? Do QBs ever get hurt passing? There probably weren't any this year ... I guess ...

I'm signing Hurts to the extension and I'm not asking him to change much at all ... I think his running will lessen naturally as he continues to improve as a passer. The difference in him as a passer from 2021 to 2022 was incredible, I don't know why some people act as if he's somehow reached his peak in passing ability at 24 years old in his 2nd season as a starter? I mean what is the alternative? Draft a QB and start from scratch? Everyone imagines if you draft a QB it solves all your problems ... like you are automatically adding Trevor Lawrence when there's a much higher likelihood you'll end up with Mitchell Trubisky, Johny Manziel, Jake Locker, Baker Mayfield, Blake Bortles, Josh Rosen ... I can really go on and on. For every Joe Burrow there's a slew of these bums. You have a solid option in Hurts, yes, there's a higher chance of injury for a QB that runs than one who doesn't ... but we just went 14-1 with the kid and he's nowhere near his prime as a signal caller yet. If his career has some injury here and there you find a way to deal with it, but I keep riding this train as long as I can. I'm betting he continues to improve as a passer and if he can stay away from "serious" injury he can have a successful career much like a Russ Wilson. If he breaks down, then so be it ... but I'd rather play that hand than depend on hitting some lottery ticket in the draft at the most important position. We have 3 prime weapons in Brown, Smith and Goedert ... keep investing in the OL to keep Jalen clean and everything will be alright.

Yes, they do.

When they run to that extent on top of it, they're hit at a higher clip and are putting themselves at a greater risk for injury.

Hurts making all pro is the final nail in the washer coffin and in the "anyone but hurts” coffin.

So far in 3 seasons, Hurts has had a high ankle sprain and a mild shoulder sprain. Meanwhile, Burrow has had a torn ACL,MCL,PCL and meniscus, dislocated a finger, and had two less severe knee injuries. Tua Tagovailoa has had a couple hand injuries, fractured ribs, 2 concussions (maybe 3) and a neck injury. I think Herbert has only had a rib fracture so far.

I think 2 of the 2020 QBs just happen to be more durable than the other 2. I don't think Tua or Burrow should run, but Herbert and Hurts can take more punishment.

Hurts said hes played through injuries that people didnt know about, so hes been hurt more than that.

Virtually every player in the NFL does that. The team is obligated to report normal injuries, not pain.

Maybe it explains why he didnt play well last year, who knows.

Eagles should be doing all they can to sign Hurts this offseason, plain and simple.

We don’t want the distraction of our pro bowl and second team all pro QB entering the final year of his contract without a deal.

If hes a true leader then he would show up to work and finish out his contract and not make it a distraction

Lol - I’m sure Hurts would be professional, but it would still be a major distraction about why we have let our elite QB go into his final year without a new contract.

Plus, what do you tell Jalen? "Sorry Jalen, we would offer you a contract, but a bunch of guys who said you sucked on a message board still aren’t fully convinced”

If they don’t win a playoff game, he will have to wait.

Remember what happened to the last almost MVP second team all pro QB the Eagles paid to soon.

Pretty simple what you tell Jalen...

"We loved the steps you took this past offseason and what you were able to put out there on the field. You have come a long way from your first season as a starter. You're the most important piece to this offense and your leadership goes without saying. The locker room is behind you, the coaches are behind you, and the front office is behind you. We feel that you are on the right path to getting a max contract and being paid top dollar at your position. You had 22 TDs and 3700 yards and we would like to see those numbers improve while you run less. Since you are our biggest asset we feel that the way you play the game now is sometimes a bit reckless and we need you to be healthy and available as often as possible. We have faith that you can take these next steps in the offseason and come this time next year we will be talking about one of the highest paid players in the league."

Even though I would prefer to hedge any extension on Jalen's postseason performance, I agree, I don't think Lowie will. They will sign him regardless of what happens in the playoff, and the injury excuse will allow them to structure the contract in a way that it comes with a million different outs.

Are we really talking about Jalen Hurts not being extended right now? Going in a different direction? He has appeared franchise-y this year, almost MVP-like.

Wanna trade for a QB? How about Aaron Rodgers?

Wanna free agent? Why not Tom Brady?

Wanna settle? Why not Garoppolo?

Wanna draft a new QB? How about Will Levis from Kentucky?

Wanna trade Jalen Hurts? He is hurt right now. Not getting top package, but there could be a market.

I think Jalen Hurts gets extended and the challenge to Roseman is how to fit under the cap moving forward.

This year is our window of opportunity while Hurts is paid so little and Howie can afford so many free agent pieces.

Doesn’t seem like any of these players give us the salary to succeed or window of opportunity to do it now really other than Hurts.

Another way to look at this (and feel free to correct me if I’m wrong), is that the total guarantees for Josh Allen when he re-signed was $150m. Just one year later, Murray got $189m totally guaranteed. So waiting one year for a lesser player nets you an increase of $40m in guarantees in that example while also removing the ability to spread some of those guarantees into that 4th year.

Thus, if the term of the contract is 5 years (which I think is how Murray’s is structured), waiting one year means you effectively lose the ability to sign a starting-caliber player over the life of the contract. So from a financial perspective, it’s pretty clear what you need to do.

Then, from the on-field perspective, not paying him this off-season is effectively saying you aren’t sure if his performance this season is indicative of future performance. That’s fair enough in the sense that nobody ever knows what the future holds with respect to these contracts (and we were just here a few years ago). However, unlike our prior franchise QB, THIS young man has improved every year since he became a college QB AND you’ve given him a plethora of young and extremely gifted weapons. Further, based on sheer probability (and the crazy level that he’s played at this season), he probably won’t be as good next year but with the weapons Howie has already given him, the numbers in such a scenario may still not reflect a significant dip in play. I propose that for those advocating for a "wait and see” approach, the team may suck next year but with AJ, Smith and Goedert, the starting QB will likely still put up great numbers if healthy. So, from an on-field perspective, not re-signing him this off-season is a gamble that has little upside if he is healthy but carries substantially more downside.

And for those advocating for a reduced price tag if he doesn’t win a playoff game, while I understand the attempt at an incentive-based negotiation process, there is little precedent for it especially in light of his other accomplishments this year. In fact, I would venture to say that the playoffs for him are only credit-accretive and won’t reduce his value.

I fully expect that this off-season, at some point, the Eagles will sign Jalen Hurts to a contract that pays him the most guarantees in NFL history.

5 hours ago, UndyTaker said:

I think that’s precisely the point Hurts will make in a negotiation (at least that’s how I would attack the injury issue). From Jalen’s agent’s perspective, each time he has missed games due to injury, it was the Eagles (and not Hurts) that determined that he shouldn’t play. In fact, he has never been removed from a game due to injury. If I were him, I’d argue that he could have played that Jets game (ie, he finished the Giants game and he still dealt with the ankle injury for the rest of the season anyway) and the 2 games this year. Thus, the Eagles should not use a decision they made (reportedly contrary to Hurts’ desire each time) as pretext for not paying Hurts his market value. In other words, Lamar’s situation in which he has been removed from games and admittedly unable to play is dissimilar to Jalen’s situation.

Pretty fascinating stuff.

Everyone wants certainty. It's not there in football or anything analogous to this situation. Every young QB, including Burrow, Allen, and Herbert, have flaws and unknowns. I would take Hurts. Attitude, leadership, and willingness to work within a scheme. This year he has shown that he can throw the rock. Short and long. How many years did we watch chunky soup not progress in his skill set and pitch worm burners? Hurts seems coachable, leads his team, and has talent. That is a big deal. Burrow, Allen, and Herbert may be more talented but also out of the league sooner because of ego -- they are not as coachable.

Howie will see the benefit in diluting the signing bonus over the remaining rookie deal, and convince Jeff that he’ll just be that much more expensive in 2024 when Jalen has the franchise tag leverage.

Yeah I agree, because of limited success and injury history, he’ll have better outs than even Wentz did
