Playoffs both years as a starter, lost only one game in which he played this year, youngest Eagles QB to reach the SB, likely second in the MVP race this year. He's a warrior, a leader and he's ours. Why would you throw that away by letting him walk? Give the man his money, and trust in Howie to make it team- and cap-friendly. A magician at QB, and a wizard GM. What's not to love?

Good time to remind: if you just want act like middle school cliques trolling and insulting each other go to RnR.

  • Just take a moment to realize how easy things look for this offense when the quarterback is right. This team just scored 28 points against a divisional opponent in a half. Just insane where things cou

I'm not saying let him walk at all. I'm saying paying 40 a year guaranteed for the next three years lol that's the opposite of letting him walk lol

I swear you guys just want to fight to fight. You can list all the accolades you want, but the reality is a high level of his production is done as an off schedule RB and nobody in the league pays rbs long term. If he wants to continue this style of play which you guys defend like it's your child, than guarantee his pay for a few years and have exit ramps everywhere. Now if he threw his 35tds, then I'd probably be more comfortable with that 45 range. Not taking away from his on ground accomplishments because they were record setting. I'm saying that it's .... Not sustainable. Many have expressed they don't care if the kid only has a 7 year career, but the organization will have a different opinion on the matter....probably Jalen too

It's funny how many people mocked Random Reglar for preferring QBs that can run and further suggesting that we ride Hurts through his rookie contract and replace him with another similarly skilled rookie when the time comes for salary cap reasons only --- and now they are all like "well ... we have to be careful not to commit big money to this guy that has been in the discussions about elite QBs all season long."

For me it's pretty simple. You evaluate the players (specifically, I'm referring to QBs here) you have and look to upgrade as necessary. You give the player a chance to win a job and keep the job. If he meets or exceeds expectations, you do everything necessary to keep the player.

Also sounds like to me the Eagles did research on Watson, but likely weren’t really interested, but Howie was very much interested in Wilson. Lurie stepped in and said no to any other option.

Really interesting now to revisit the Deshaun Watson situation:

Quote

Whether hyperbole or not, the phrase "being turned down in five minutes” was used by multiple NFL sources to describe the Eagles’ efforts, and what can be said categorically is that Philadelphia was dismissed very quickly when requesting a meeting with the talented QB....

The truth of the matter is the Eagles turned the page the minute the rules of the game were clearly defined by the Texans and Philadelphia was excluded from playing by the Watson camp. The interesting part is why Watson was so steadfast in his refusal to come to Philadelphia from start to finish in this entire saga. The principles aren't going on record anytime soon but the strongly held belief around the league is that Watson's aversion to the Eagles had to do with his loyalty to Jalen Hurts. Sources familiar with Watson's sentiments pointed to the relationship built between the two players in the offseason through the connection of working with the same QB trainer, Quincy Avery.

It sounds like Watson is loyal to Hurts and did not want to compete against him for the starting QB job.  And the Eagles got outbid by the Broncos for Russell Wilson. Can you imagine what may have transpired this season if either of these guys got traded to the Eagles?

I'll say this --- QBs have an interesting decision to make regarding the size of their contracts. Rodgers was the MVP last season, signed a huge annual contract, hurt his team (cap-wise) and with a lesser team had an off year. It's very clear he's being phased out in endorsements as his success on the field faltered. I believe Mahomes made around $20 million last year in endorsements alone. QBs that are looking to maximize their personal income should see this as a cautionary tale.

Players should be paid what they are worth, but they need to consider the team around them if long-term success is their goal.

For the next 2 weeks I’m hoping they work on back shoulder passes with AJ and Smitty.

It’s almost unstoppable if you’re on the same page, and both of these WRs have elite back skills and body control. I’m shocked we haven’t run more of them, especially in 1 on 1 looks.

Personally, I mocked him because he wanted three running QBs in the backfield at the same time and to use Mailata as a short yardage/goal line back.

C'mon now.

It's a huge risk/reward play. I'm not so certain they have to do that against the Chiefs' defense. Whereas the 49ers' D locked down a lot of the short/intermediate plays in the NFC Championship. They let Eagles' WRs release deep, like they were testing Hurts' injured shoulder and were willing to take their chances. Luckily the Eagles hit on a deep throw to DeVonta early. But I don't believe the Chiefs' D is as stout. So I think the Eagles offense should find more openings running their offense straight at them in the Super Bowl.

I’d suspect $50M APY is the bare minimum for Hurts and that’s probably only if we get it done before Burrow (Herbert is no longer a true comp for Hurts imo).

In any event, as I stated a few weeks ago, at some point this off-season, Jalen may very well become the highest paid player in NFL history which is insane on multiple levels.

Definitely >$40 million per year. I wonder if they go short-term extension (4 years or less, greater APY), or long-term (5-6 years+, less APY but more $$$ overall)? Could Hurts be the first $300 million QB?

Random guess from what Howie would do is 5y, 225$m(45per), easy outs after years 1, 2, and 3

About where I see it falling.  Just a few million difference

If he wins Super Bowl MVP, I’ll chip in $100.

Ah hell, let’s make it $110.

Hey, I’m good for it! As long as I can do monthly installments.

What a disappointment he's been

So for all those people that said "Running QB's will never win a superbowl", I guess we're about to find out.

Hopefully this will shut them up

I don't think anyone said that.  They said a running QB has never won a Super Bowl, which is correct.

Some people will balk at this, but I see a 7 year extension for Hurts at around 320 million with around 200 guaranteed. Outs after 3 and 5 years (so in reality after 4 and 6 years). Means we can look again at his age 28 and 30 seasons and spread the cap. In particular will mean we can keep the hit low over the next couple of years.

And what sort of cap hit next year bud?

What is the signing bonus in this scenario ??

Next year, if you mean 2023 will be unchanged.  The first year of his new deal will be 2024.
