Jalen Hurts discussion (Part 2) - see new topic for contract extension

That’s when negotiations continue

Are you just trying to be pedantic, or do you really believe that even through endless negotiation, Philly will never offer a contract to Jalen that he’ll want? What would be the next move then? How do we negotiate with someone who won’t want what we have to offer?

Good time to remind: if you just want act like middle school cliques trolling and insulting each other go to RnR.

  • Just take a moment to realize how easy things look for this offense when the quarterback is right. This team just scored 28 points against a divisional opponent in a half. Just insane where things cou

Speaking of fully guaranteed contracts. Kyrie has a little bit of 'back tightness' tonight. Why not make 450k per game on the bench instead of doing what you are paid for?

Man, we really need that in the NFL.

Sign him asap.  The price will only go up as other QBs are signed and raise the bar.

I truly believe that Jalen is more focused on winning a championship, so I don’t think we will see a Watson/Rodgers contract.

That said he knows his worth and is not going to take a contract below 45 million a year.

If I had to guess, I’d say a 6 year extension of around 300 million with about 200 million guaranteed and a reasonable out after 4 years of the extension

Thing is bud... If he takes that kind of deal then he is kind of doing a Watson and Rodgers. I don't blame him at all but it'll hamstring us.

It certainly wouldn't be a popular decision or plan, but business-wise I would actually prefer to let Hurts play his 4th year (maybe with a raise?) and see how he does again next season...and hell, franchise tag after that if needed.

Don't get me wrong, I do like Hurts.  Love his mentality.  My only issue is that much of what makes him good is his ability as a runner.  He uses that ability quite a bit.  Because of that, his injury risk is higher than normal and will only get higher each year...hell, each game...the more he continues to use his legs to bail out the offense.  So we could end up paying killer money for a player who may spend more time rehabbing than playing when it's all said and done.

That said, that's not Roseman's style.  I'm sure they'll extend him this offseason because that's what they do.  It would viewed as "cold and calculating" to let him play his 4th year without a new deal...even if that really probably is the better business decision.  Playing out his 4th year would also allow one more season of "QB playing on rookie deal" type of salary cap benefits and perhaps enable another run at a championship.

No. The poster claimed the Eagles will pay whatever Hurts wants. I simply said he was wrong, because he is. There is a difference between wants and needs. I didn't think that would have to be explained here, but I should've known better.

What do you think Hurts contract is going to look like when it's all wrapped up?

Probably in the 45-50 per year range. I’d hope there’s an out after 3-4 years for the potential scenario that his injuries increase, or his legs start to diminish and he’s unable to live up to that price.

Of course, also have bonuses included so that if he maintains or improves his level of play his contract keeps up with the market

So pretty much what everyone else in this thread is saying? That's pretty interesting given your constant state of confusion.

But there’s a big difference between the deals that Rodgers and Watson signed that are fully guaranteed and immediately cause cap issues and a Mahomes or Murray style contract that has a large average value but is more team friendly with opt outs and low early cap hits on the contract.

I’m not confused in the slightest

I think the Birds will give him more guaranteed money and no longer than 5 years. I think Howie will structure it where the big cap hit will be in the backend; Jalen will get his guaranteed cash, so it doesn't matter to him how the contract is structured.

I'm sure Howie will work it out somehow and as you say Jalen will get the contract that he's after.

It would not be the best business decision.  It would be a very bad business decision.

If we take away the likelihood of a Hurts hold out/trade demand or the moral issues that it would cause, there is still the following:

1) The Eagles really can’t afford to franchise Hurts. The exclusive franchise tag will likely be around 50 million for QBs in 2024. We would likely lose him on the non exclusive tag.

2) An extension would not replace his rookie deal. Only the proportion of the signing bonus would hit the cap. He would still be a low cap hit this year.

3) QB salaries are only going up. Burrow, Herbert and Jackson are all about to get big deals. The earlier we sign Hurts, the cheaper he will be.

Signing Hurts as soon as possible is the best business decision

Then why do you constantly use the confused reaction?
