NIKE supports human rights as defined by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which recognizes that "all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights.” We work to elevate human potential through our products, partnerships and operations, something that cannot be accomplished without a fundamental respect for human rights throughout NIKE’s operations. We expect the same from our suppliers, and focus on working with long-term, strategic suppliers that demonstrate a commitment to engaging their workers, providing safe working conditions and advancing environmental responsibility. This includes working to combat risks of forced labor. For more information on NIKE’s commitment to sustainability and human rights, please see our annual Impact Report. This statement is being furnished pursuant to the UK Modern Slavery Act, the Australia Commonwealth Modern Slavery Act and the California Transparency in Supply Chains Act. This statement discusses NIKE’s global business practices to address forced labor. This statement encompasses NIKE, Inc. and its consolidated subsidiaries because we take a global approach to forced labor compliance. However, not all of our consolidated subsidiaries are subject to the UK Modern Slavery Act, the Australia Commonwealth Modern Slavery Act and the California Transparency in Supply Chains Act. As used in this statement, forced labor includes modern slavery, prison labor, indentured labor, bonded labor, human trafficking, or other similar conduct.

Quote "In New York and the northern New Jersey suburbs, fewer than 100 of the 67,000 mortgages insured by the GI bill supported home purchases by non-whites.” Quote Fear of Black Advancement When lawmakers began drafting the GI Bill in 1944, some Southern Democrats feared that returning Black veterans would use public sympathy for veterans to advocate against Jim Crow laws. To make sure the GI Bill largely benefited white people, the southern Democrats drew on tactics they had previously used to ensurethat the New Deal helped as few Black people as possible. During the drafting of the law, the chair of the House Veterans Committee, Mississippi Congressman John Rankin, played hardball and insisted that the program be administered by individual states instead of the federal government. He got his way. Rankin was known for his virulent racism: He defended segregation, opposed interracial marriage, and had even proposed legislation to confine, then deport, every person with Japanese heritage during World War II. When the bill came to a committee vote, he stonewalled in an attempt to gut another provision that entitled all veterans to $20 a week of unemployment compensation for a year. Rankin knew this would represent a significant gain for Black Southerners, so he refused to cast a critical proxy vote in protest. The American Legion ended up tracking down the Congressman who had left his proxy vote with Rankin and flying him to Washington to break the deadlock. As usual, racist Democrats are projecting.

June 29, 20214 yr I wonder which party desegregated the military after WWII (despite recent claims by conservatives that our military has always been color-blind).
