That by itself wasn’t a huge deal. Nixon still won re-election. But over time the Washington Post and other news outlets connected the break-in to Nixon’s campaign. Then more underhanded tactics and bad behavior were revealed (in addition to the Watergate break-in). Back then the Republican Party wasn’t a cult so Nixon was convinced to resign 18 months into his second term.
