Many companies feasted on low interest rate bank debt for the last decade, but much of that debt is variable rate -- SOFR (basically the fed funds rate) plus a fixed spread. When SOFR was 0, a SOFR + 5% loan with a 1% SOFR floor was 6%. Now it is over 10%. It crushes balance sheets and the ability to service debt. Plus, a lot of guys are hitting maturity walls. Finally, a lot of bankruptcies now are in the commercial RE space, which is decimated by higher rates and the work from home trend.
