I think making a decision that big based on the media freaking out is a mistake, but on the other hand, there's actually a chance to make lemonade out of lemons here and come out big on the other side.  Also, more than anything, there's another debate.  If the nation has forgotten about it by then (which seems to be the case a lot of people are making), Trump will agree to the debate and it'll happen again.  Only then it'll be too late.

Yeah that's the risk, and has to be weighed against the risk of undermining all their rhetoric about restoring democracy if they straight up yank Biden off stage and kick Harris to the curb after the primaries.

It's not a risk.  It's a certainty.

I think it's a moot point, frankly. I don't see a realistic scenario where that happens if we're just basing it on what happened last night. If it happens again or he has a legit medical issue, then sure. But even then, I think they're boxed in and are forced to go with Harris and then pick a running mate for her. In which case, Whitmer doesn't seem likely.

Do they really want to take a chance that he won't look like that in the next one? Or he's worst?

Not coming back, Really? I'd say this is quite the come back.

It's not like Biden was just off his game, his game is gone and it's not coming back.  Father time is unforgiving.

We can't rely on any crises to occur only when Joe is lucid.  He's the executive of the government and he's being led around by his wife and a bunch of caretakers.  If you didn't see this coming, it's on you.

Biden was at least telling the truth or mostly truthful when he was coherent. Trump just lied

I watched some of that panel; they did not appear undecided at all.

One lady was anti-Biden, but all they did was tell her she couldn't wear MAGA stuff to the focus group.  Another young lady said she'd made up her mind because Biden was sympathetic while Trump was lying the entire time.

Those people knew full well who they're voting for (if they're voting)

This is exactly why the debates with these two particular candidates don't move the needle much. These aren't two guys we haven't heard from before. Nobody is sitting at home listening intently to hear where they land on particular issues (as if anyone even cares about policy anymore.) They both have been in the job for one term each and we all know exactly who they are by now, so the only decision left to make isn't an eager voter trying to pick between the two, it's whether the 2020 Biden or Trump voter will go through the trouble to cast a ballot again or just stay home this time. It's about maintaining turnout, not courting defectors. If anyone tells you they're switching their vote from 2020 and now pulling the lever for the other candidate, they're almost certainly lying to you.

The debate doesn't move the needle and won't change peoples minds. Not, if you want to save Democracy and the Rule of Law.

Also, after last night, Trump needs to pick someone perceived as a safe, moderating influence for VP. Tim Scott had a really good night. The worst thing he could do is pick someone like Vivek or JD Vance. He is now the unquestioned front runner -- there is no need for unnecessary risks.

It's a shame the admins who run his twitter account can't debate for him.

Pretty sure he was tweeting during the debate, maybe that's why he was so confused, trying to multitask

They don't need to. His speech in N. Carolina was terrific.

The VP could end up in whatever insurrection/mess that trump creates when he loses again

Don't know if it's funny, sad, or a bit of both

But no one will see that. Millions of people saw him last night. I hoped he'd be like the guy from the State of the Union, but he crashed and burned. Giving a good campaign speech in NC won't help.

@we_gotta_believe is right that not many votes will be changed, so it's about turnout. And Biden crushed his own base's belief in him last night. It was a mortal wound. Pretending otherwise is foolishness.

Of course he has to do 2nd debate.  Only way is forward, they just gotta hope he has a good day and goes for 1/2.

I like that they're going with the "he's a decent and honest man" routine like he didn't just lie about a bunch of marines dying on his watch. Wild stuff, but the lemmings still eat it up.

"We know our candidate is a lying crook and don't try to pretend he's even remotely honest" is a weird flex, but ok.

I think some of you guys are going overboard with the fatal wound stuff. He still has a solid chance to win, you guys are putting way too much stock in a single debate in June. This isn't Kennedy v Nixon where one debate could decide the outcome.

There’s being bad, and then there’s being an abject failure. The public’s concern going into last night was about Biden’s age and competence, and he exacerbated that problem massively. He could afford a C- performance, but that was a solid F right out of the gate.

I argued all along Biden was the best shot to beat Trump. But after that performance last night, he is cooked. That was his first impression, and unlike previous cycles, there won’t be another debate in a week or 2. So this image is locked in until the next debate in September, if it happens.
