That's the issue, you technically don't have a "new candidate" until either the virtual roll call or the convention. Him stepping down now means he would have to endorse Harris and then pull down every ad as they roll out new ones tailored specifically for her. It greatly limits their ability to campaign on the accompishments of his term, even if they try to shoe horn in some rhetoric about how influential she was during the process (which is a tough sell.) 

The whole point of the primary is to resolve this so that you can enter the convention with a focused campaign. They'd be forfeiting all that and sort of starting over, even if Harris is the presumptive nominee. Apparently a lot of the pushback from his campaign team is because of this no-man's land scenario. The calls for him to step down haven't included support for Harris. They want to avoid at all costs an open convention, because they know it would be a disaster if they projected anything less than broad support for her as the presumptive candidate. I mean, it's already a disaster with the way this has played out publicly and the in-fighting has grown so toxic that it's basically two factions tearing each other apart while the other party rallies behind a convicted felon with unwavering support. 

Nobody invents new ways to lose elections better than Democrats do. 

Im not really familiar with potential Dem candidates. But I do feel like theres a decent chance they can have my vote by putting someone other than Harris in. I wont vote for her. But put someone in that looks pretty competent and reasonable- I will consider them.

Perhaps if they had chosen a VP candidate based on accomplishments and not sex and skin color they wouldn't be in this predicament.

I think you guys and probably the idiots in charge of the democratic party these days are underestimating how desperate many people are for a reasonable alternative to the loons that have been nominated in these last 3 cycles.

Put up someone who looks and sounds presidential and the majority of the country will be all about them right away.

Thats whats being implied and it seems logical, but it doesnt make much sense in todays climate.

She's Vice President and was a US Senator.  Granted, she's never been convicted of a felony, but she still more than qualified.
