The alternatives aren't solely This crap or Socialism, Eisenhower was perfectly comfortable with high marginal tax rates and help for the poorest in society and he wasn't a socialist in any sense of the word. That's the problem with US politics in a nutshell, we've moved the supposed center ground so far to the right that the policies of guys like Nixon look like pinko nonsense, we think American society has always been a survival of the fittest, devil take the hindmost Randian fantasy and it's nonsense. Someone working 40 hours a week in any sort of job should be able to maintain a roof over their head and a standard of living above basic subsistence, that shouldn't be a controversial view, nor should it be considered Socialism.
